Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

We’re on the front line and we have valuable input...

I work SCO and we expanded to 18 self-checkout (SC) units.

I have noticed not as many cashiers on the schedule so it has forced some people to SC.

I know for a fact our store loses a metric ton of merchandise through SC. That’s the biggest area of Shrink there is and I catch the same people over and over or they go to a set I’m not working. I catch more tag switching too.

Corporate doesn’t care.

I think they can write off their loses.

They are taking jobs from people so they don’t have to pay increases or Medlicle or PTO/PPTO.

WALMART IS STINGY.

In 2016 Doug M CEO was worth $18 million with salary, yearly bonuses and stocks. Walmart is the largest and riches global company. They could pay associates $15+ and the bigwigs would still make way more than enough. But they act like you are privileged to work at Walmart for $13 or less.

They could do better on their discount card too. 10%, but not on many of the grocery items. Other box stores(Target) and grocery stores do more for their associates.

I wish Sam’s children and grandchildren and so forth had his outlook on taking care of his associates. He believed in investing in his employees. He alway preached listen to your associates.

We’re on the front line and we have valuable input.

When you think about it, our SCO cashier is a combination of cashier, loss prevention, and tech support all in one.

Let me try to assist with juts the shrink end of the statement.

They don't 'write off shrink' but it is reported as part of the stores finical numbers to the government. This is why you have a shrink goal that's a percentage of sales. This is the amount that the store is expected to lose of the course of the year. Remember that shrink comes right off the bottom line and can truly impact sales if (big IF) it runs out of control as a whole or certain areas. Another reason why a proper inventory is critical for all retail stores.

In today's times it's safer to have proper support (off stage) policy and procedure in place to help eliminate shrink. You can capture and save money properly ringing RTV's or Mark Out of Stock etc etc. The ticket swap you mentioned is a pain and costly. The (assumed) high shrink item left the store (still booked) and the cheap item was rang (removed from stock and now not able to be sold). Also difficult for any AP division of retail to 'apprehend' (catch) for that crime. Some local PD may not even charge for that type of retail fraud or it could depend (as well as a policy) on the difference in price. It may need to be over $100 for example.

You may be seeing items 'walk out' but ultimately what the percentage to sales? Whats the district at and like stores? Having AP stop people costs money as well. Hiring, training and the like. Then on top of all that they have a huge liability with in that division. They mess up it's bad, real bad.

In retail the external theft impact is minim over the course of a year as a whole. With the exception of a professional shoplifter who can hit an environment for very high dollars, and will usually hit the high shrink areas.

If you want to reduce shrink you have to look at internal theft. It represents the highest percentage of the total number. Any google search will tell you this, or the NRF (National Retail Federation). Any employee that removes items with out payment, or assists other to do so, or manipulates systems to defraud the company will drive shrink up every year. If you have a high shrink number in an area (above like stores) your cause is more likely internal and not external. Employee's have a schedule and show up and do their thing, external theft may hit the same store or not, they might not even get out that day.

It's frustrating to see items leave with out payment. But in the end it is a business run by objective number just like sales.

It is cheaper to have someone steal than pay an employee hourly wage and benefits.

Walmart doesn’t care about associates. It’s all about the $$$$. Took away our raises went from 40 cents to 20 for an entire year of work. Stole our sick time. Reduced the amount of time we can earn for vacation. More money for health care coverage etc, etc...AWFUL company.
