Somebody said this in another thread, but I think it bears repeating: there are plenty of companies that are doing really well right now and are hiring. My brother was laid off at the end of May and he already has a new job at Lowe's. And since not too many people are looking right now because they are waiting to be called back - this is the best possible time to start looking.
Don't be scared, be proactive.
