Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

Things are hard right now, but don't give up hope.

Former (8 years) MST field tech here...I remember getting that call from my boss on a pleasant Friday in spring about two years ago, he sounded clearly upset by his tone, and I pretty much knew what was coming before he uttered more than a few words.

This is where I tell you that my life turned around as soon as I was laid off, right? Not so much. I spent a year and a half working temporary contract gigs, bouncing from company to company...never really making decent money, no benefits, no job security. But I kept looking, kept doing my best work, kept showing my value to employers...and six months ago I found what is easily the best job of my life, earning more money than I've ever made at a company I love, a company that appreciates my hard work.

I don't tell you this to brag, I tell you this because I want better for every person who works at Macy's. You can do better, trust me. Looking back, I can't believe I spent nearly a decade at a company that clearly never valued the work I did.

If you're furloughed, laid off, back in your store but scared for your job...freshen your resume, put on a brave face and look for better employment. We all know Macy's is doomed, why waste a few more days, months, years at a company more interested in overpaying their executive team than they are running a functional business?

Best of luck, friends. I worked with many of you, all over Northern NJ, NY state, and NYC in my multiple assignments, and while I don't miss my job, I miss all the wonderful people I worked with.

"Subtle forms of age discrimination may make older workers uncomfortable or unhappy enough that they will retire, even though they may not be able to pinpoint actual discrimination as their reason for leaving. The bottom line, however, is that subtle discrimination is no more acceptable in the workplace than blatant actions directed at older workers."

Agism is one of the problems that exist in retail. Every employer ask you if you are over the age of 40+ and it's even harder finding a job with pandemic.

At age 60 with 29 years of service, 20 years of that in support the job prospects are much more limited. I have been called back from furlough but am very wary of what the expectations will be going forward for those of us left in store.

Age plays into it too...much easier for a 30 something to find a position with another company than a 50 something....but Macy's has done nothing but eliminate as many 40+ employees as possible over the last 10 years

Oh wow than you for inspiring us with cold hard truth. That's what some of us need, tough love. Might be the only time we wake up. It happened to someone I heard about. After spending years from a teen there, the hardest, best, honest person around, he was thrown out. Of course, the executives make the most money for doing what? They are the ones who hurt the people to save themselves, but how long will it go on?
Happy for you, and thank you!

No they destroyed me, I don't even deserve better at this point. Save yourselves. I've never heard of anyone having a worse life after Macy's.

I agree with this post except I see that political and somewhat technical folks are able to easily switch jobs via their networks. Otherwise I agree that after hard slog of 18 to 24 months you may land on a much better job.
