Thread regarding Sabre Holdings layoffs

Shirk Unplugged Recap

"I can't answer that" or "I don't know."

Translation: we're still crunching the numbers with airlines shrinking post COVID-19 by 30-40% you can bet Sabre will downsize an equilateral amount.

Prepare for the mass purge of US employees for a 5:1 "Get Heldee Plan" 2nd Pass.

@6suy+14neLbhW - I don't hate managers, directors, or anyone else. I will say the person you replied to is exactly the type of manager I'd LIKE to work for and wish there were more of... assess the situation, make an accurate appraisal, define the options for action. Then hopefully move from point A to B decisively.

Most seem more interested in not rocking the boat and just puttering forward as long as whatever metrics they're judged by look reasonable.

Admonished? Are you kidding??

@6kcy+14neLbhW- Other manager here. And now we see why so many on this board hate managers and directors. People are worried about their sources of income and all you did was admonish them for doing so.

Do better or, why don't you GTFO? Dave?

Manager here too.
If you are worried about a list at this point,
you should just quit. The next 9 months will be so full of lists that your head will spin. You or I may / may not make the cut. I don't know, but if you are the type to sit and stress about it. you should just leave or ask to be part of the next round. The next 9 months will be hell for you if you stay

Manager here- very little visability to "the list" other than requests for the options people want.

I have heard managers have already prepared list - minimum required for lights ON.
Is it true?
Will the lay-off decisions like in 2017/18 be made by HRs or will VPs / Directors have a say?

I will say its pretty funny that a leadership that touts that we have to "modernize" utilizes outsourcing practices that have been outdated since 2004.

Regarding outsourcing/rebadging, Wade's meeting which followed Shirk's had some particularly offensive and, tbh, dumb commentary. Wade claimed to be deeply hurt by an outsourcing question asked but not answered in the prior meeting because in his view sabre isn't a US company that outsources but an international company. This is clearly nonsense if you look at the history of Sabre then the reasons for offices abroad. I think it's obvious that the primary reason for offshore presence is cost savings and not for any sort of strategic advantage.

Regarding competence, with architects but also including others, offshore employees are far from the biggest problem. The biggest reason is that sabre makes little effort to attract top talent, specifically salary and benefits wise. Second, there is practically zero effort to train up employees. Try getting approved for tuition reimbursement or going to a professional conference and you get laughed at.

Hey guys, come on, we should rather focus on how to survive this crisis and get out of it stronger instead of insults. It doesn't help us or our company. Together we are stronger!

It appears that the US based enterpise architect have received full, proper sub-continental education.

@5lug+14neLbhW Some ideas of US based enterprise architects from late 2000s / early 2010s:

  • Invest heavily in Flex
  • Implement EJB and OSGi features in Flex (this is not a typo)
  • Using EJBs for code that does not even use transactions
  • Ban usage of Maven, Ant must be used instead for Java projects
  • Limit usage of conditional statements in web applications as they "slow down processing". We are talking about Java, not some low level assembly / C++ code performing millions of iterations per second
  • Claiming that all communication channels built on top of TCP are synchronous. Hence JMS is a synchronous API
  • Using JSPs instead of WebServices or REST for handling remote calls
  • Synchronous logging to a disk in performance critical code

@5woa+14neLbhW : they are making fun because they don’t understand most of the things educated architects are saying. Cheap employees are just that.... cheap in skills and thinking. The reason why Sabre is in bad position is because of sub par developers in such centers. Rebadging is best way forward.

@3dmh+14neLbhW - face the truth - US employees are not only more expensive, but also less qualified. In Poland junior developers are making fun of American principal "architects". All empires eventually fall, as good times create weak men. You have to accept the rise of other countries and the supremacy of China.

We’re going through a crisis affecting thousands of Sabre employees and you’re wasting time spewing lies and hate? Go work on your resume and leave. I’m sure you’ll be just as dissatisfied, you sound like that kind of person.

All dislikes are from
People in krakow and montevideo. They are waste of space and should be rebadged. Try writing some decent code for once OR try solving an issue for once.

Good move by rebadging employees. Most of those products and people who worked on them were inefficient. Same should be done for Krakow and Montevideo offices. Most of those folks are the reason why we generally end up in a mess

Why doesn’t Shirk move to India with his family and work on Indian salary. It will save a lot of US employees.
