Thread regarding Bed Bath & Beyond layoffs

Are furloughs really permanent layoffs for some employees?

Knowing our leadership, I’m guessing that furloughs due to the Covid-19 situation are going to be a perfect opportunity to permanently reduce the workforce, which they planned to do before this situation escalated. In that sense I’m expecting further cost cutting announcements in the following weeks in which they could announce that fewer people are going to be working at certain stores when this is over, or something like that.
How many people can we expect not to be called back to work?

This is the perfect way to get rid of any positions or employees they don’t like. They don’t even have to provide a reason. They’ve been trying to eliminate positions and start getting rid of people who have been with the company awhile. In my last district they had store managers bouncing back and forth between two stores instead of each store having their own manager. They can and will make this a good opportunity for themselves. Period. Operations managers were a thing of the past. They had regular associates doing it similar to soft side/hard side supervisors. I was making over 18$ an hour as a– supe. Once I entered my last district they only hired in at $13 for the new position. Once I left the position went part time for less pay. I was a store manager for another company that was 1/8 the size of Bed Bath and I ran that store with the same payroll hours. I had customers following me at bed bath and lines just waiting for me to finish with one customer to help another. A good portion left empty handed frustrated because I was the only person on the floor. Customer service is dead. The stores are running skeleton crews and it’s not even that we were short staffed. We were staffed at the max we could at 400-500 hours a week. The company took a serious downfall while I was there for 3 years. Bloody Thursday’s were a constant fear. No one was safe. They don’t care about their people, just how little they can get away paying them and not getting benefits.

Unfortunately, I think that this is going to be a problem that will be presented to all retail establishments not just BBB or the companies under their umbrella. I do think that there will be growth in other industries. Since we all have the time, start thinking about what you want to do that isn't retail oriented. Lots of us are going to have to change industries and job functions/roles.

It’s the oldest trick in the Retail Playbook; severely cut hours down to five or six per week to get the employee to quit and not have to pay unemployment.
There may possibly be an exception to this because of the circumstances and you may still be able to file because the company dramatically changed your scheduled hours from what you regularly used to get. This will most likely be a state by state consideration. I recommend filing anyway, the worst that happens is it’s bumped up to an adjudicator (how it’s done in Illinois) and they override the company’s denial, if it still doesn’t go your way appeal the decision. This will take time but if you win the monies are back dated.
You’ve got nothing but time, I say go for it!

I am sure that they will eliminate roles like ASMs or condense other roles like the Store CST into some other, more floor driven roles (think of the new “pricing specialist” role). We all know that they have been itching for a way to finish up the process of eliminating this role. BUT before they do this they will start to offer early retirement to SMs and ASMs to help reduce the cost of this process, also allowing them to retail good ASMs into SM roles. Kohl’s did this a few short years ago, Target has done it, and so have many others. It’s a great tactic so we will see where it will go. The company needs some younger, maybe a bit naïve, but willing to drive big change. Expect major announcements on their next investor call.

I work for buybuyBaby under the BedBath&Beyond umbrella. They just reduced part time hrs to a maximum of 5 hours per week. My average hours this year are 30.23 per week. By cutting the hours yet keeping us on the payroll they eliminate any chance of us receiving unemployment benefits. This was well thought out on their part. By doing this, we part timers will not be added to their numbers that are reported to the Work Force Commission thus saving them money. So this works out great for the Corporation, not so much for the workers.
There are many reasons people choose part time employment, semi retired, child care issues, school etc. . We choose this willingly knowing that we would NOT receive any benefits, yet expecting to be treated fairly. Where is the fairness now?
We are just as dedicated, and work just as hard or harder then-some full time employees.

Furlough the Part Time Employees Now.
We are the ones, during this crisis that have put our lives on the line by having the most contact with customers. Yes we can wear gloves, but No masks. Where is the fairness?
Most of us really enjoy are jobs, and are looking forward to getting back to the New Normal
, but in the mean time don’t make us suffer by keeping us on the payroll and not letting us collect unemployment. While the full time employees are not affected in the least.
We’ve shown our loyalty, now is the time to show yours.

That's ridiculous. This is a bad situation but the company did a lot more than most by paying for awhile. I think they've earned a bit more faith than that.

Well that's insensitive and vague. I'm sure our company will use this time as a chance to streamline what else would you expect? Things will not be the same in any way for quite some time. Many positions will be lost in this. Does it s—? YES! Does ALL of this s—? YES!
But to say yes you're out like that is irresponsible when loyal bbb workers and their families are stressed and worried. Just dont be a d–k seriously.
