Thread regarding Baker Hughes layoffs

Thinking of switching to work for an oil company like BP as they seem to value their employees more. Advice?

They’re on a different boat but it is sinking too. It isn’t a company known for treating employees the best but it is a company that tries to utilize other methods before to doing RIFs. Any major you go to will come with good pay but high pressure and expectations. However, if you have the opportunity to go over there from Baker then I would do it without hesitation.

Stay on this horse. Unless your so skittish that you just gotta jump, but rest assured that if you do you’ll be paranoid there too, and look to bail again. If you’ve been on this ride for a long time you’ve seen this movie more than once.

BP hires no one unless you know someone who can refer you, so to give you actual advice, find someone on LinkedIn that works there and reach out. Try to get a referral, otherwise your application will be lost in a sea of applications. IF you have a friend at BP, even better!

But also, every oil and gas company is laying off. It doesn't matter whether service or E&P company.

You are illusionated. BP is worst. As matter of fact, BP is planning to layoff in 12 weeks and another round could be in July. They have just get rid of their contractors.

I think OP thinks switching just requires changing the employer listed in LinkedIn.

I’m not sure what oil planet you’re from. Given the state of the current global oil market, all companies must do what is required for survival. That means a lot of potential cuts, furloughs, lowered benefits, permanent layoffs and capital spending reductions. In so doing, they’re actually doing the right thing so that those remaining can survive with the company. I would say that if you’re stupid enough to jump one oil ship to another in the current state while still employed, then Baker Hughes wins with you gone, and you and the stupid oil company that hired you deserve each other. Sorry you are such an entitled snowflake to feel no one cares about you, Nancy!

So does every service company worker.

Really you can’t be even from oil industry saying something like that... you are from financial sector. It is like Asking a mortgage broker why he doesn’t go to work for Goldman.

We make and do the things BP needs, we don’t do BP’s job.

BP is worse. If you can get into big oil, go for it. The doors are shut. They have better benefits.

Just remember how they threw their guys under the bus after Deepwater Horizon. Didn't seem to value their employees at all than.
