Federal, state nor local government mandates that Eddie keep stores open.

He will lose money keeping the stores open he will claim the lost money was a result of keeping essential stores open not lagging sales in general (even though I speculate Kmart is probably somewhat busy just because everything is closed). He will ask for government money. He will get a few weeks of operations paid for at taxpayer expense.

I believe that Sears will not be the only retail casualty of the virus....

Other retailers are laying off large amounts of their workforce.....Macys and Kohls for example.

Whether they will be able to recover after this is all over will be an interesting question.
