If so, when? before or after pulling the trigger?

I have a lazy dork coworker in my group who I despise. His one habit may have cost him dearly. He always leaves his company badge in his laptop and doesn’t lock it when he gets up to take a rest break and a cup of coffee. This week I waited for him to get up and leave on break and I quickly went to his desk and signed him up for EOI. I hope his request to go is the first to be honored.
It depends on your relationship. On good general terms with your direct report, might ask for some accommodations during exit or extra time or resources to hand off project work, would consider staying if your role changed: If any are true then yes, I would tell after I was 100% sure I was going to file but before I formally submit. On the other hand if the guy is likely to be a jerk and make your last few months miserable, then no: you have no obligation to do so.
