Half of Paramount Network and TV Land’s promotional team was fired

The head as well as all VPs, all editors, half the design/animation team had a ‘separation’ from the company today.

Firings were completely based on income.

From what I’ve gathered, no one from PN or TVL was consulted on who should retained or let go. Viacom’s practice of hiring foreign workers who need visas to stay in the country were saved based on that they work as de facto slaves and their salaries are much lower than their American counterparts. This is not meant to disparage them. They deal with the hand they are dealt but let’s be honest, Viacom abuses the situation of new American workers to their benefit which is detrimental to the free market this country is so proud of.

'US Immigration laws mandate that all foreigners hired under a work visa must receive the same level of compensation as a US green card holder/citizen who's qualified for the job. Part of the immigrant work visa review process involves submitting information for approval to US Department of Labor which then uses its own scale to determine whether salary offered to the foreigner is on par with what employers would pay an American worker. This is done to prevent US companies from hiring super cheap foreign labor at the expense of US workers. Just saying...'

That's great to hear that that's the law but it isn't being practiced at Viacom nor many other creative places of employment in LA or NYC.

That’s a shortsighted view. If visa holders were free to switch jobs, companies would pay them better as well as be more selective in handing out visas. This would benefit all as those cheap highly skilled workers wouldn’t exist and it would force everyone to pay fair market.

At TVL this was started by the old leader of Nailgun who also hired a lot of foreigners who needed visas and paid them c-ap. I believe he’s at Nickelodeon now and it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s using the same techniques for cheap indentured employees who have no other options for employment until/if they receive their green cards. This technique keeps creatives salaries low across the board because there is always an eager foreign national who wants to live work in the US. The system needs to be changed. If a foreign receives a work visa from a country, they should have the full rights of American workers for an extended period of time. They should be allowed to leave and take other jobs. This would balance pay for all.
