As long as trains are run over the mountain, there will be a mechanical department. As far as the shops, who knows. Not entirely sure they provide any more than a contractor could, bit that could be said about any shop really. Altoona is also a major recrew spot, it would take some major restructuring, but not impossible to eliminate T&E.

Here to confirm both rumors. Conway is closing as well as Altoona. NS is looking to give the work to contractors in the future. It’s a new age of railroading.
