So doesn't this go against our contract of a 40 hour work week. If we agree to this will the company try and lower our hours at contract time, especially if the unions are allowing it now. Also if you took this would you qualify for the 600 unemployment the government is giving out?

Yes. They should just lay-off folks now so they can’t stop being angry over voluntary days off. They have mandatory job loss. Then we’ll all be happy.
Your absolutely right, and they'll take what they can get right now and in 2-4 months they're gonna have another layoff too! It's coming get ready for it!
i can't believe how upset you guys are getting about this. just wait it'll bite them in the a–. Everytime they cut something too deep they're always begging people on the bump board to take a job or asking a conductor to step up as an engineer. If someone in Omaha has a dream agreement guys can volunteer to take time off and it'll help the bottom line then just step back and let it happen. I bet it doesn't last more than a few weeks if that. Or it will be like trying to take a PL day or a free day. Oh sorry there isn't enough people rested on the board for you to volunteer to take a day off, but thank you for being willing. Now that we got you on the phone I need you to take this rock train we were just about to call you.
Just hold on, the you can volunteer to take a day here or there isn’t going to work and they’ll have another round of layoffs. And when they all finally go to the table on the contracts you can bet that they are still going to f**k agreement employees over because instead of the unions standing up to them and saying no you decide to run PSR and ended up in the current financial, logistical, and employment mess(the virus isn’t completely to blame that’s another lie) we are going to let you deal with it, the unions caved thinking it would help them in the negotiations and give them a leg up. News flash this new volunteer not to work list will probably be included in the new contract and they company is going to tell them you did that to save your jobs we don’t have to bend on anything.
I dont think you can collect unemployment on a voluntary layoff. You also only make around 350 a week. Also if you want money from the cares act that isnt through the rrb you have to go through the government for it.
The key word is volunteers each union member should just say no thanks. The fact of the matter is they will still furlough regardless of how many members participate. It may not be in the next few months but it will come since the carrier is reducing the fleet to at 4000 locomotives or just below that number. Just say no.

Id rather be furloughed collect 1900 than to lose a day pay or more a week. Trump will extend the unemployment benefits no way the economy bounces back by july 31st. Seems to me railroad trying to find away to save that government unemployment money they got instead of the employees getting it. More pure greed. Unions had any balls they would turn this voluntary plan down.
I know if I get laid off one more time I will find a different job when everything gets back to normal. My CDL license will get me a better job than switching boxcars. The Railroad retirement won’t be there when I retire so what’s the point anymore. 8 years and still worrying about a furlough give me a break. This company is ran like a clown show!
The question we need to be asking is this, Are other companies doing this to other Union workers with contracts?
I'll take a lump sum buyout with one year of continuous insurance if the price is right!
Without a written agreement voted on by the members this will be a new normal for the railroad. Just remember if up wants it it wont be good for the craftspeople.
Hearing everyone is getting behind it to “prevent” a layoff, but here’s the million dollar question if not enough people take it are they still going to layoff? If so then just go ahead and do the layoff especially if that’s still the endgame.
No, this does not count as unemployment because you are still working and getting paid. If it’s volunteer time off then this would not go against the contract because it is voluntary. If your union does not volunteer for this then expect a furlough.
