Everyone should be living below their means. If you can't make it through two months of reduced pay, in most cases it means your household finances are way out of whack and it's a sign you need to improve that for the long term regardless of when your furlough ends.
Let's start with your car. Most of us are in cars that we can't truly afford or at least that are not smart financial decisions. If you are gaging what car you can "afford" based on monthly cash-flow and the assumption of endless car payments, you're not managing your household finances right. If you don't have a paid off car, you need to sell whatever you have and pay cash for the cheapest used car that will get you going. Then start setting aside at least a few hundred bucks per month towards your next car with a plan to pay cash for it. That's just for starters. Then when stuff like this happens, you can divert that monthly savings temporarily if you have to toward other household necessities. Use this as a learning experience.
