Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

500 ASMs were terminated today

ASMs who had two areas of improvement on their evaluation were let go today. Only exemptions were for new ASMs who haven't been here long enough for an evaluation.

I was let go on February 20. Two consecutive bad evaluations. When I got the one last year the store manager had moved to another store and the new manager told me not to fight it that he would take care of me. The store went to great work Place and I got transferred to the store where my old manager was. He gave me another bad evaluation.
Didn’t take into consideration or want to hear about how I had 103CFF score. About how we did 600 to 800 check out with me in a week. How I got VPI participation over 100 every month.
Told me he didn’t need me all over the store.
Who would talk to the police when they came to the store if AP wasn’t there. Who would do the cash office if the coach wasn’t there. Who walked with eco-lab. I also worked as many closing and weekend shifts as any other assistant. I basically work 60 hours a week for the last two years.
That is unless they want to me to work a sixth day that week.
Yeah I used my dental benefits last year. And I actually got 14 days off paid.
So you can’t take the decision to the market you can only call corporate for an open door.
They get back to you after 10 days and tell you that when the store managers got together and did the evaluation they didn’t know that a second needs a valuation would result in termination. I told him that the evaluation was garbage because I did a really good job.
Bottom line is if you’re not kissing some serious a– they don’t care about anything else.

For the post "is this for real or fake news? "
Hard to believe yes but very real assuming your question was for real or maybe tongue in cheek. I feel the same, must ask myself is this really happening? Thankfully for me, I am not a Walmart employee but my wife WAS. And she too was an ASM caught up in this mess and now terminated.
I still can't believe a company can be 1.) this callous and 2.) this stupid. Will never set foot in a Walmart ever again.

This coming from a company that just got a huge tax break a few years ago. I am not an economist but what happened to we are giving it back to associaties.

This is exactly why Amazon is k–ling Walmart. Instead of keeping loyal associates they would rather bring in new lower paid. Wal-Mart is going down hill fast. Every wal-mart I shop in looks like it’s going out of business. The employees are over worked and under staffed to save money. That’s why everyone shops Amazon.

So instead of displacing and getting severance or another position, Walmart is terminating Assistant Managers that need improvement. What’s f$6(ed up is assistants aren’t allowed to demote.

I feel for everyone who is losing their job over the idiocracy of the Home Office. I spent 10 years in the Home Office and during the last 4 years of that I saw the same thing - good people being fired. Ofttimes, because they make too much. Ageism was a huge part of it. Targeting those over 50 along with those making too much money in the eyes of the company. Included in that was people who had the audacity to use their health benefits. (Walmart is self-insured. That could not estimate their costs year-to-year to save their soul. Every year they were underwater.) They then started targeting the remaining associates they wanted gone by giving them bad evaluations. That was the kiss of death for your career at Walmart. By doing this, you were not entitled to any severance package or unemployment. (And Walmart skimped on the Vaseline during all of this.)

And you ask yourself why as you find yourself without a job? It's simple. Walmart has become run by a bunch of incompetent village id–ts. (Home Office) They thought they were King S#!t sitting on top of the mountain. They rested on their laurels. They allowed Amazon to pass them by while they sat there thinking because they were the biggest, they were the best. Not anymore. Plus, too many other retailers have emerged as better over-all than Walmart.

As for me? I left of my own volition. (You can demand more money while employed.) I took a side trip making a little more money but got laid off after 2 years. I landed on my feet making $30k more than my last year at Walmart.

I now use Walmart as my very last shopping option. I shop at the Dollar stores, Aldi's, Whole Food's, Trader Joe's and Fresh Thyme where the employees are treated better. It's my personal boycott. It won't make much of a difference to the bottom line. But it makes me feel better because of the horrific treatment of their associates.

Scum bags. Randomly ruining people's lives who don't deserve it. Remember working hard isn't good enough if you're not the favorite.

We have assistants that have never had a bad eval losing their jobs and others that have multiple development needed evals year after year that get to keep their jobs. There really isn’t any consistency that I can see so good luck to everyone who may be on the chopping block with “great work place” coming to your store. From what I heard it’s move up or move out, don’t try stepping down to a role where you may have a calling for because it has shown to come back and bite the assistants that have tried, couldn’t even get interviews for coach positions. It like I said, good luck to everyone.

There needs to be a little more “clarity” with these posts. Some are posting states and some are posting very diluted comments. I am aware of a mid west asm that received a needs improvement status and still had a job.

Honestly, request weekly feedback from your manager. This will show you are trying to improve yourself. Take the information with a grain of salt, and make it priority and be persistent with the change.

Take one day and access for your improvement, take what you took from that day and make the next even better. Small wins add up to big wins.

Yes this is true in Houston. Store managers where instructed last week to review the lists that were sent to them. Where instructed to terminate the ones on the list. No severance pay / no warnings. PTO payout of only 5 days. Myshare apparently is safe for March 19th since you had to be employed as Of Jan. 31, 2020 to be eligible for payout. All of this has been hush hush even when managers used open door to find out just to be terminated. The store managers had the authority to change ratings to keep the good ones but if you didn't kiss their a– you get canned.

Yes all this is very true. If you are an assistant store manager for WalMart you need to be very aware of what’s going on. All of this is happening during your evaluation.

If you received a below expectations or a needs improvement on your evaluation be cautious of what you get this year because this years eval counts.

The store managers gets to pick who they keep and who is leaving.

There are managers that don’t come to work Don’t complete their notes. Don’t support their leadership and are being given a solid / meets expectations evaluation this year to be kept. Upper leadership is not aware of the friendships that have the weight of their evals for those that are being kept.

If you receive a below / needs last year ? And you receive a below / needs this year ? You get terminated when you get your evaluation. All of this going on this week.

We have Co store managers being fired right now for the same thing.

Most of the needs / below expectation evaluations that are given are mostly for metrics not being met. Turnover ? Sales ? Profit? CFF? All of this weighs on the classification during your evaluation.
Not totally on performance. One manager in my store received his termination this week. No accountability for behavior correction or performance on file. 17 years with the company and terminated.

One manger has exceeds for 2018 - became a store manager in 2019 - ran a sh– hole store got a development need just to find out he is getting a below expectations this year because he is still transitioning to a new position as a demoted assistant and is about to be terminated.

Wal-Mart doesn’t want to RE-TREAD old managers / they keep who is playing the game not the ones doing the work - tit for tat

Walmart is a horrible company. This is what they do. I got a bad evaluation last year after years of good ones. Took 4 days of leave for a necessary surgery after missing only one day in past 10 years and received poor eval 6 weeks later. Then written up for using and appliance in my area that had been in constant service for longer than I had been in the store. I was called irresponsible for using it. This was about a week after I came in and worked during properly scheduled PTO because they were short handed. This company has no moral compass and I have no respect for the MM's and RM's that carry out these morally repugnant schemes.

I found a great job and moved on. My new employer has thanked me for my leadership and attitude. He has told me his is thankful for WMT's stupidity in letting me get away. He has sent me a card in the mail expressing gratitude for all that I do.

Get out of this toxic workplace. It is a vexation to your soul.

I left the mess of Wal-Mart at the end of the year. Working in a professional setting now with much better hours and zero stress. Wish I would of done this years ago. I got to my 20 to get the lifetime discount card and got out. ASM for 12 years, last year I was miserable there. The way the associates were treated by Market and Regional management before a joke of a bus tour was ridiculous. That's the day I updated my resume' and got the hell out.
