Thread regarding Nordstrom layoffs

Bare minimum corporate staff

Back in the day, it was known around the IT circles at Nordstrom that project work in general was a “nice to have” and that if it were necessary, any and all new development tasks and capex could be scuttled and IT reduced to a bare-bones support staff.

Imagine like the old SAT group (does it exist any more in a devops world?) and maybe 100 or so pure maintenance developers, fixing important bugs only. No projects, no stupid mobile apps, no changes to the web site outside of the templates contents by selling staff, just what is now.

And those lucky few who remain would be grateful to have a job at all, at whatever salary.

Is something like this still possible? Coming to a corporate center near you?

God I hated the SAT flunkie I had to have run my scripts in production. What a useless human being.

I have got the skills to pay the bills. Let's do this.

"I write mobile apps."

"I do UI design."

"I manage projects."

"I manage project managers."

"I am part of the organizational interface between Technology and the Business."

"I run batch jobs and check the logs."

"I'm not sure what I am doing at the moment."

I was in a Nordstrom FLS this weekend. Just kidding, maybe store 1 this past November, though. I think.

So is Nordstrom forever burdened with these overpaid mobile developers and other tech grifters? At what point is the web store feature complete? Do you really need to rewrite the mobile platform every couple of years?**

**I acknowledge that the early revs of the Nordstrom mobile apps were completely unstable garbage, due to shoddy amateurs writing the code. But now it is improved, what needs to be done? Change a UI theme every year or so to keep the fast-twitch Millennials happy, I guess. Analogous to replacing the carpets in the FLS.
