Thread regarding Bed Bath & Beyond layoffs

Older employees should be prepared

If this rumor about more layoffs is true, I'm betting you older employees will once again be targeted. Every layoff so far I've seen a disproportionate number of those over fifty affected. I'm just surprised that nobody sued the company yet, but I guess people are scared of losing their severance. I can understand that.

In any case, if you are over 50, have a backup plan ready.

Well if all the "old" workers are going to be targeted...I certainly hope this includes all the DMs and upwards...lord knows they contribute nothing but toxicity and intimidation and bullying. Time for all of them to be shown the door.

People need to start reading some of the older messages... A lot of them have similar messages. Haven't been in a BBB since they let me go, Other places take the coupons. I hate driving so far out of my way just for some simple things. I must have 30 coupons accumulated so far. If they want me back, I am a phone call away... Of course a closer store would be nice.

To @2gkb+13uEtJBQ, point 3: Our store’s B&W display doesn’t look like the standards BECAUSE THEY'VE YET TO SEND US THE PRODUCT LMAO. DM doesn’t care, though, he just complains and breezes out of there.

See the problem is you can complain about how the older ones shouldn’t get the axe because of the experience they bring to the table... but things are changing and if you want to stay you have to change with it. I had an HR come to my store saying this to our management team. Many of them didn’t want to move forward with the new initiatives like ordering less for less demand. We don’t need 40 of an item that we put 8 on a peg of and sell 3 a month. That makes no sense. We need to drop the shelves to make a better sight line (customers have noticed!) but no- there is always a manager or 2 who will raise it to the top- then a DM will call the store out on it and it’s hell for all! Some older ASMs don’t want to use the compute to help schedule and spend a full week making a schedule for a store of less than 30 people! Some don’t want to get away from the old scheduling habits to schedule to make sure we have the coverage when the customers are shopping vs when they want a project done. Some refuse to use the new tech to look up a guide on a phone instead of waist of time to find it and print it. Some can’t keep up with the constant upgrades to the systems! If you look at any of these basic things and say that’s it’s stupid it not helpful then you are out moding yourself. That’s what they are looking at this round is your ability to adapt and change still. Some of you have forgot and become stubborn. The CEO said on his last call that they will he making extensive talent and personnel changes at EVERY LEVEL both at a store level and up through Corp. they will be looking at so many numbers, and I know that both DMs and SMs have a lot to lose since Corp is currently doing their market research to determine

  1. Is the market shrinking because of shoppers leaving an area, new stores, etc
  2. Are you losing sales because of CS, coverage, lines?
  3. Are you losing sales because of appearance and POG/ visual Merchandising follow through (I’ve seen stores set up seasonal and bee and willow shops that DO NOT LOOK LIKE THE GUIDE) and it’s hurting your customer experience.

So basically they are going to look at who is failing who. Is the customer failing us or are we failing the customer. Look at your own store and you tell me which of the 3 it is.

With this talent realignment you will see DMs, RMs, SMs, and ASMs let go either through layoffs or through A newer version of PIP. Changes are going to come quick and swift this year! Be ready!!

They put all their ducks in a row.... trust me. I was a store manager when the purge of 18 happened. And not only did they choose people carefully, but they also had a chart of all the ages of the managers they let go to give to each store manager. Listing the ages from youngest to oldest and the mean age of all employees that were let go in the area. You can try and sue but that’s prolly one of the few things they did correct(notice I didn’t say right). Hard to sue when they cross led their t’s and dotted their i’s. I personally think one of the people I let go was due to their age bringing down the average..... but hey. That’s just my speculation.... but at least if last time has any indication of how they’ll handle it, someone getting let go will get paid a day or two before someone sitting you down to tell you that you’re being laid off. That was a bit awkward on that Wednesday......

There are lots of lawsuits pending against the company from disgruntled employees and ex-employees... The company lawyers are sitting on them... They do one at a time, One day at a time. Including mine, I am somewhere it the mix at about 640 to 800. depending on the severity of the situation. Just hurry up and wait... Because of my age, I have been struggling to find a new job, and my unemployment just ran out. There are very few full time job with benefits out there.

"The more tenure the higher your pay, the more risk you are to the finances."

Just wow. Not a word about the wealth of knowledge and experience these seasoned people can provide. Not so nice to wake up and realize you've given a decade or more to a company that rather than celebrate you just views you as a liability and can't wait to find a reason to axe you.

I don’t mean To sound.. well I guess frank here. But let’s be real- most ASMs, SMs, and those in higher up positions have been with the company for 15+ years on average. Most of them are over 50 just by the simple math that they have so much tenure. The more tenure the higher your pay, the more risk you are to the finances. You can’t say age is a issue in a mass lay-off in a company like this.

Rumor has it that it will be more vp’s in corporate and it and hr which has been outsourced now.
We don’t have any full time people except for the senior managers. You can’t have the part time high school kids run the stores. You might as well close down.

And if you make a good salary, watch yourself. New Jersey is an "employment at will" state, meaning that an employer or employee may terminate the relationship at any time, without a reason and without cause. Proving it was based on age could be difficult.

They are eliminating your job, they are not technically replacing you. Let’s face it, lay-off is just a nice way of saying “you’re fired”. There’s no way anybody is suing them- their lawyers will drag things out until you run out of funds and settle for a lot less than you ask for. There’s no question all the past layoffs involved people with bullseyes on their backs but good luck trying to prove it.

Well, i am sure on that list there is a mixture of people, male/female, black/white to make it look like they are not targeting a certain age. and if you did sue, they cannot hold the severance unless you sign something.
