Macy’s Shuts Tech Center in Broad “Optimization”

Nordstrom may be a little different, because stupid sprawling Macy’s had multiple headquarters and the inefficiency that results, but I bet you that these hotshot SF techies thought they were safe as houses until this hit.

Nordstrom may be stuck with its overpaid, entitled Seattle tech crew, because its own headquarters is here, and offshoring was such a corrupt disaster in the past. Does Denver still exist? Could a cloud-deployed Nordstrom shift resources there, or anywhere else, to escape the Seattle tech toll?

The contempt with which the Seattle office always held those people ... I bet they would be glad to work harder, better, at half the pay.

The contracts with **** were scandalous in the past, the talent they sold was terrible and arrogant. Would bet anything at least one director was taking kickbacks. But that’s for another day.

Nordstrom family, please watch and learn from Macy’s. They are on to something. Do the needful.

Don’t need cloud. Seattle is cloudy enough.

There’s enough in stock to last the coronavirus incident. Lots of unsold stock. Don’t worry

If China goes offline with Coronavirus, how will Nordstrom source its dog-fur-trimmed jackets? Will Americans do this difficult but essential work?

Again, I want to remind the $275k TC Nordstrom Technology braggart that the whole point of cloud, ci/cd, and devops is to restore the natural order of him making $75k, at best.

And only if he works really, really hard.

An aside, I wonder when $JWN will start closing underperforming Racks?

Macy's 3-year restructuring plan is called "Polaris".
Will Nordstrom's plan have a name, like it's some software beta full of hype?

Read this letter from the Macy’s CTO and tell me it doesn’t sound eerily familiar:

“Common services journey”. Just like how they copied “multichannel” retail with stupid “omnichannel”, now it looks like they are doing RSP!

Cheers to any old timers who understand. Good luck, lads.

The Macy’s board here is quite active, with good commentary:

Yes, I know that Macy’s s—s, I agree with you on that. But at least they are reining in the mess, instead of foolishly shooting the moon with the Manhattan FLS.

That project and its condos should have hit the market 3 years ago, and still it would have faced stiff headwinds. Today, the move looks s–c-dal. It’s going to devour scarce resources as things get very real and very scary this year.
