Thread regarding Chesapeake Energy Corp. layoffs

Why Stay?

I’m seriously asking current employees (no trolls). Are all current employees just staying until they find something better? Or get a lay-off package? Or do you still believe we can turn this around?

Are you staying for the benefits? 401k too good to walk away from? Daycare too good to leave?

I’m honestly asking because I can’t think of anything worth staying for. Unless we sell an asset soon, we will only continue to get more and more short handed. Why are we all k–ling ourselves with these long hours, high stress, time away from our family and little acknowledgement or reward? I’d love for a Chk employee to help me see why it’s worth sticking it out?

To those that are looking for new jobs and trying to make the best of it, here are a few insights:
1) Are your skills transferable to another industry? The O&G industry dip will be extended if not permanent.
2) Accept that you may have to relocate.
3) Consider something completely different
4) Consider going back to school or pursuing a second career doing something completely different.

I work in a different industry because my skills transferred and that industry needs more engineering, science, manufacturing, technology, software developers, data scientists/analysts, etc. BUT while there are some of those jobs in Oklahoma outside oil and gas - many are outside the state.

So unless you are just a few years from retirement, I suggest on switching industries entirely. Or stay in energy but look into other sources that are adding people.

Best of luck! And there is life after CHK! Onward and Upward!

This is just a sad post. Sad that good people who are hard working and talented are going through this due to the greed of a few and perpetual lies coming from the top. The reality is that there should have been changes made at a very high level right after DL took over. When a company reaches $20B in debt don't you have to assume that the person that is head of finance might need to be changed out? Nothing against them but they obviously were in well over their head and will never recover. DL was quite simply loyal to a fault. Too bad so many have had to and will continue to suffer for it.

I don’t think it is the CHK on my resume that is keeping me from finding another job. I think it is all my years of experience are in the O&G industry, which has flooded the workforce with so many other candidates to compete with fewer jobs. I am sure potential employers look at my resume and are smart enough to know this companies demise is not a result from a lack of skills doing what I do.

I remember a few years ago when there was a shortage of good talent for hire. Now it is low hanging fruit, many job positions are gone but the number of workers remain. I held on to hope thru the recent price crashes but all hope has been gone for some time now, and I have never had this hard of a time finding another job. So in the meantime, ya put on a fake smile every morning and do what ya gotta do to not be un-employed. Like I said, it is toxic but it cannot go on forever.

I yearn for the day to see the burning barn in my rear view mirror...

I got let go and it has been a good thing. I wasn’t lazy and I wasn’t dishonest, but I did speak my mind and told the truth to my manager when he asked me questions... for that, I wasn’t popular with him and even some other folks. CHK has some good folks working there that I miss working with, but mostly it’s a barn fire in my review mirror. I feel sorry for my peers who are still a passenger on the slow moving train wreck. I’ve been forced to get on with other things, and honestly that was going to happen sooner or later anyway. I don’t see CHK lasting more than another year or two, and the changes that will likely happen between now & then will make it a place I wouldn’t want to be a part of anyway. More BS to come. I still visit this site every now & then, as I like to keep up on ole CHK in my spare time.

Most good people in management in my particular discipline were let go or secured other work long ago anyway. Just keep earning your paychecks and be grateful for them, while making other plans.

Most CHK employees are not qualified for much else. Resumes with CHK work history go straight into the trash.
