Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

831 Tech Jobs

In a letter to California’s Employment Development Department Monday obtained by Bisnow, Macy’s Vice President of Human Resources Shamika Lackey informed the agency that it intended to lay off 831 technology division workers between April and August of this year, including 24 software engineering managers, 74 software engineers, 91 senior software engineers and 45 software technical leads.

Macy's San Francisco operations have been based in 680 Folsom St., a 469K SF tower in San Francisco’s South of Market District owned by Boston Properties. While the layoffs are bad news for San Francisco, the decision appears to be good news for the Metro Atlanta market. Macy’s is leasing 105K SF at a newly constructed, timber-framed office building known as Hines’ T3 West Midtown project. Macy’s told San Francisco employees they would be able to apply to open jobs in Atlanta and New York. Macy’s lease has been known in Georgia economic development circles as Project Northstar. It is unknown exactly how many new employees Macy’s will hire in Atlanta, where it already operates a technology office in the affluent northern suburb of Johns Creek. Given that many urban offices today average about 200 to 250 SF per employee, Macy's new tech hub could employ in excess of 400 workers. A source familiar with the deal told Bisnow that the Johns Creek office won't be affected by the 105K SF deal. "After careful consideration, Macy's offices in San Francisco will close. The functional operations that currently sit in the 680 Folsom location, including Macy's Product and Digital Revenue, .com and Macy's Technology will move into our locations in New York City and Atlanta," a Macy's spokesperson told Business Insider Tuesday.

Only one Q: are the SF team members laid off being provided a 2 months notice (I heard that the facility is shutting down April 1st) or being let go immediately with severance??

Macy’s to lay off 831 workers as it closes SF tech division

Macy’s is laying off 831 employees in San Francisco at its Macys.com division amid plans to shift tech operations to Atlanta and New York.

In a letter filed with the state of California on Monday, the retailer said the layoffs would take place between April and August of this year and impact everyone from software engineers to technical leads. The division has its own office at 680 Folsom St. in San Francisco.

Macys.com has been based in San Francisco since 1998, when the retailer’s parent company established it as an independent division, at a time when many established companies saw the potential to spin off their internet subsidiaries amid a mania for dot-com stocks. Its closure marks another blow to established retailers’ hopes of competing with Amazon.com and startups as more spending shifts online, and big flagship stores that once seemed like such a big advantage are shrinking.

Macy’s has steadily downsized its physical presence in Union Square, the city’s upscale shopping district. Last January, it sold a portion of its flagship store — the historic I. Magnin Building — for $250 million. In 2016, it sold its men’s store at 120 Stockton St. for $275 million to Morgan Stanley and Blatteis & Schnur. It also closed a store in San Francisco’s Stonestown district in 2018, part of a nationwide trimming of its store count.

Macy’s leases 243,000 square feet at 680 Folsom St., and its lease expires in 2028. according to real estate brokerage data. A spokesman for real estate brokerage JLL said it is marketing the space for sublease.

Macy’s is holding an investor day on Wednesday where it’s expected to unveil more details of a three-year strategy amid an effort to adapt as consumers shift increasingly online, according to Bisnow.
