Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Lack of PSG increases?

Despite multiple 2+ rankings, I was told by my supervisor there were a VERY limited number of PSG increases at the end of year. One would assume this has to do with the EOI. Has anyone else heard similar?

Promotions has been mostly for those who talk well but do not do much, look around yourself and see who goes up the ladder and generally hardworking good people are left behind, if you talk really well, exhibit stupidity in brilliant presentations and self confidence with crazy ideas that would for sure fail and is wrong but still pain it as game changer, you go up, that is how it works that is how it always worked here I Chevron or outside.

promotions are not light this year in ITC. instead of staying at the 10% maximum threshold for promotions... they flaunted that they had the highest ever promotion rates in ITC at 15%!

Unfortunately we are back to the ROM days where people are pretty lucky to have and retain a job. CEO has just announced massive cuts to spending. So no promos this year. But once things settle out normality should resume in 2021.

Promotions are light this year because its part of an overall strategy to reorganize the company.
There will be significant movement of people into new roles, voluntary separations, layoffs, asset sales, restructuring, streamlining functional roles, etc. etc. I think leadership wants to see how things shake out, what the teams will look like at the end of the year. Promotions were mainly limited to those who have been in the cue for promotion for a while and were are the very top of the local list to be promoted. Promotions mean more money and we all saw what happened with the corporate bonus factor. I think things will be more dynamic next year and spring pdc of 2021 will be interesting

What range PSG does supply and trading fall under? All above 28?

If you have done the work on the next level consistently for years and salary is over the CO then it is a matter of your supervisor/manager going to bat for you. Some are not qualified to do that or have other favorites they'd rather promote.
I worked there for over 30 years and know you have to confront them with your accomplishments and make them identify where your shortfalls are. Move on to another group if this doesn't work.
Chevron is not the only place to work. There is life outside Chevron.

As many have mentioned it's not just the annual PD outcome. One item I have not yet seen on this topic thread is % of C.O. Even in a placed job if you are 105% or higher for 3 years then you ought to get the promotion. FWIW.

Ranking alone doesn't promote you automatically. It takes a specific promotion request/justification from your supervisor. This year I went up from PSG 22 to PSG 23. My ranking this year was 1 an last year was 2+. I was expecting the promotion since my supervisor asked me to fill out the form last june to justify myself.

OP has not provided enough information. Are they on a technical career ladder or in a multi-placed job position or just a placed position? What is the current placement? Promotions are not just based on your annual performance ranking. Promotions usually come faster, the lower the person's PSG is, and can occur without having a PMP 1 ranking. But the higher the person goes...the promotions are slower and even with great rankings may never happen. If the person is placed at a high PSG ... then the promotion probably can only occur if there is an open position ... or else the current job description needs to be rewritten and approved which rarely happens, since the business may not require it. People on tech ladders or multi-placed job positions do not have that issue ... however they need to exhibit that they have been performing at most of the next PSG level job descriptors ... again ... somewhat independent of their ranking.
If the supervisor said there were limited PSG increases this year, you must be in a placed position where there is not as much flexibility.
But I also agree with other feedback, that supervisors at times find it difficult to truly explain what is going on and why.
I do not see what EOI (expression of interest for voluntary severance) has to do with it ... other than if you are in upstream AMBU which is getting k–led off

Took me 6 years to go from PSG 24 to 25, and 7 years to go from PSG 25 to 26.

It depends on your PMP ratings but just as importantly on well developed your network with management is. Make sure your management is well informed about your accomplishments.

OP

Remember that all CVX managers lie. Some of them enjoy lying, particularly to screw over otherwise deserving employees.

And HR is not any help. CVX HR view it as their main contribution to try to withhold deserved benefits from employees as cost-saving measures.

CVX mgmt has a list of EE’s who they think will never leave.

What To Do?
Keep your skills improving
Maximize annual training
Keep doing a good job
Keep your resume updated every 6 months
Always explore the job market for better opportunities
If you don’t get a deserved promotion, be prepared to leave or to use an outside offer as leverage to get what you deserve. You can only use the ploy once.
Best to use that leverage when industry is in a regime of increasing O&G prices, and those opportunities are easy to miss.

Remember, your direct supervisors at CVX are trained to lie to you at all times.

"Has to do with the EOI" that you communicated to him/her or the pending layoffs?

Not really the best environment to be complaining about PSG's. You might not have to worry soon.

No, you just didn't get your increase. Try again next year.

All depends on your supervisor. Does he/she like you? Everything else is a story. At the same time, promotion is not your right, so live with what you have or find another job.
