Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

recent firings of salaried managers

Does anyone know what the guidelines are for who is being terminated? I am reading on Reddit that some salaried managers are being fired for two bad evaluations in a row, Some managers have posted that they are getting fired for one bad evaluation and a coaching, others are posting that they have been fired simply for one bad eval or one coaching. All of these firings are sudden with no warning. Is there some invisible policy that we are not allowed to see. Can anyone provide further information on this?

This is definitely happening. I am a prime example. I was terminated March 11th. I’ve been an asm if almost 2 1/2 years. My first evaluation was needs development...had only been an asm for 5 months at that point so I accepted it moved on and promised myself I’d push harder to grow for my next eval. My 2nd eval ended up a needs development despite my hard work and dedication. I didn’t open door just focused that much harder on pushing to grow and learn everything I could about my business. I noticed. Other associates and fellow asm’s Noticed my improvements and told me about it. I thought sure enough my next eval’s got to be a solid. I busted my a–, gave it my all, missed out on time with my kids and family, didn’t miss a single day didn’t call in on top of driving 140 miles a day and 560 miles a week. Anywhere from 12 to 14 hour shifts on top of driving 1 hr 15 minutes each way 2 1/2 hours each day. Dedicated Wal-Mart ASM. I’m talking literal blood sweat and tears people and that’s how they did me. Fast forward to my 3rd eval as an asm..Store mgr and co mgr pull me in to do my eval...in which she discussed my past 2 performance evals and proceeds to tell me that this year I received another needs development and that the company at this point had decided to cut ties and she was terminating me. So I’d k–led myself and for what? A giant F U for all your hard work and dedication. Before promoting to asm as an hourly I’d never received anything below a solid performer on an eval. Before I left my store to go to training I was the hardware DM and left that store with an exceeds. FROM AN EXCEEDS to can’t get above a needs development for anything. I will say I was placed in a tough below standard store...however my mkt mgr told me he’d seen improvements since I’d went to the O/N shift a few months ago.

If you thinkWal-Mart cares, they don’t so don’t think it won’t happen to you. They will focus on the small things you didn’t do over the good things you did do or improve on. Here’s to a bright and less stressful future for myself and more time with my family. I pray for the same by any fellow asm’s in this position. It’s disheartening and sad to see that’s how they treat people that have given their lives to the company. I am in Missouri.

Assistant Manager are being terminated because it saves Walmart money instead of Displacing them or allowing them to demote.GWP does not require so many assistants or co managers.
The sad truth is it’s legal. And no matter if you were a loyal dedicated assistant all that went out the door.
Walmart would rather pay lower for new blood. But what they will never have is loyal dedicated associates.
I mean look at every Walmart they look like sh–, treat associates bad, they run bad. Maybe Amazon should open grocery stores, then Walmart May care more about the stores instead of competing with online. PEOPLE SHOP ONLINE so they do not have to shop in such a sh–ty store.

same here, let go without warning because of needs improvement eval. my store manager comments on things he had never discussed with me in an entire year. so now you are telling me you have a problem with something im doing or not doing. many of the comments are simply not true. but i knew this day would come because when i heard that asm's were going to be cut back i knew i would be the first to go because for one i am "older" & my experience has been that walmart managers lead by fear, intimidation & demeaning associates, and even flat out lying about what an employee is doing or not doing to make them look bad. ive seen an asm demote someone because they were fat and the asm said she didn't like fat people. and the favoritism, all you had to do was look at the asm schedule and it was so clear who was the favorite and who was the least favorite. i am shocked at the lack of integrity. and i never fit in because i treat people with respect and i am not going to make someone feel like a piece of c-ap, no matter what they do. in fact the first year i worked there i heard "your just too nice" constantly. i was so angry i finally said, really? what is wrong with being nice to people, i can't understand that being nice to people is wrong! me being nice has saved a c-apload of customers from calling the company and complaining. you can hold people accountable and still treat people with respect. while i will survive im still angry and not just for myself but for all of us.

Three ASMs and two Co-managers fired from my store last week. I am a 9 yr CSM–just got my eval last night. For the first time ever I was given a Needs Improvement, so I guess I am heading out the door next. My position is being eliminated and I would need to apply for a Team Lead position, but the NI makes me ineligible to do so. Until the evals were tied to the pay raises, I never got anything but Exceeds Expectations. Only positions I can now apply for start at new associate pay of $11. Walmart wants our loyalty but extends none to us. What more can I say...

This was obviously a nationwide, perhaps bigger, initiative. These posts are all early March 2020. Same story holds for my wife of 30+ years tenure. Evals were a set up so walmarts protection is in place before the event. And all largely under the radar of the public. Probably 90+% of the public are clueless of this. Walmart is too cleaver. Makes me want to vote for Bernie. Corporate greed is out of control and politicians are letting it happen because they want their piece of the pie.
GO AMAZON....

If people are failing as managers but are left in place then there is that much less room for advancement for others. They are called “blockers”

Good policy to weed them out. Not always carried out fairly by people.

To answer the original post / YES it's true they are letting go of ASManagers, strategically so not to interrupt the flow of business till they see fit, for whatever reason LEGALLY possible. The thing is Walmart could fire you for anything. I once terminated managers for not putting up Bicycle Fact Tags on displays as they where told. Walmart could document anything they felt compelled to document for your performance. ANYTHING! Wrong dress code ! Wrong statement made! Poor customer service! Poor controls on your areas, the list goes on and on.

Walmart is letting managers go by their strategy that they have in Great work place.

Managers a few years ago where told to go back to their stores and run them as policy / procedures tell them to and hold accountable those that don't comply or CAN'T comply. The majority of THOSE managers and continued to run their stores as before. Same c-ap hole stores. Same c-ap managers that where there for just a paycheck.

Walmart didn't like this!

So they gave those managers, that didn't have the managerial courage to hold people to higher standard, an out by coming up with this c-ap to make the company better.

But the problem is still going to remain. Managers that are buddy / buddy with their store mgr. ? Mkt. Mgr. ? and so on get to stay by the store manager giving them a solid performance eval this year.

The Company leadership should've already replaced the majority of their store mangers 2 years ago! But apparently we are still lacking that managerial courage even at higher levels than expected.

Walmart is in a state of doom until they are able to clean house and do what's right by the ones doing the work and not playing the system. Until then ? I will take advantage of it.

17 years. Got a bad eval from store manager no longer there. Opened door it. Never heard a word. 3 week's later terminated for showing no improvement or results. No discussion nothing. Just "your being let go. "

Sounds like it was a pattern for ASM's that were silver badges or higher.

@1fxh

Did you by chance have to audacity to use your health insurance this past year? Walmart is self insured and hates associates who use the insurance no matter how long they have worked for the company.

My money says you did. And that's why you were chosen.

A terrible, horrible, awful, immoral, garbage company.

You will be much happier one year from today than you were 1 month ago.

I was terminated after 35 years on Feb 27 2020 no severance pay and only 5 days of PTO for having develop needed on evaluation. Upon learning this happen to many across the nation effecting our families with no pay now and no benefits,This also effects the store associate. I was told this came down from cooperate to help better set up Great Work Place.A sad period in Walmart world has come upon us something I know Sam Walton wouldn't have allowed.

It’s true. I been with Walmart for 10 years. I been an asm for 1 1/2 years. My first eval was 6 months after I became a asm. I was terminated for 2 bad evals. I got no training no help in my store. It’s sad the company is getting dirty like this. If I s—ed that much why not give a choice to step down lol.

Yes that is true. After 18 years of hard work I was let go after receiving two years of development needed evaluations. I take responsibility of my actions but will also point to the lack of support by my store manager and not receiving any guidance or additional training.

Walmart is cleaning house. Finding any reason to get rid of people. At my store 15 year associate not put on schedule for weeks, ended up quitting. Another 15 plus year associate getting 6 hours. They are pushing people out the door that make any money. Walmart does not care about the employees, they are nothing but a number if you have been there 1 day or 20 years.
