Thread regarding GlobalFoundries layoffs

Intel Hires Fab Veteran, Former GlobalFoundries CTO Dr. Gary Patton

I was never very impressed with the guy. I wonder how he will do at Intel?

I remember being in a meeting TC saying that we should only start worrying when he leaves. That was about 2000 people laid off ago but this is the next best sign.

UAE Investors are rich and it's their money to lose.

Can't understand why folks are bothered about this.

It's not different from a billionaire buying a fancy yacht or mansion.
Where's the ROI in that ?

Yeah, just like the CTO of $6b company knew a lot before wasting hundreds of millions of dollars on 7nm, only to realize later that there was no business case to begin with....

@The Depahted, if the government was so concerned, they would have helped when TC and Sheikh went begging to Washington in 2018. Trump showed them finger.

So all you bashers know more than the largest semiconductor company in the world? You should go into the semi executive staffing business and make a bundle with all your industry insight.

I am quite sure a $40B company knows a lot more about General Patton than you do and know what they are doing. Like previous posts have said, you need to get over your GFDS (or in this case GPDS).

AMD was already doing great with GF. Why do you have to be so petty? Let it go, dude.

Here's the take I hard on this whole thing, TSMC decided against building (or buying wink-wink) a high end fab in the USA and the government is concerned with having bleeding processes for all of the alphabet agencies. With China flexing its muscles at HK, all of the former TSMC folks heading to the mainland and just general common sense, they would like to keep it within the USA where it can be closely watched. So Intel has been "asked" to step in and reignite their foundry initiative. This should be easier now that GF is out of the picture. GP is being put in charge of Design Enablement and PDKs. Why put a CTO in charge of such things unless it is to really do something substantial like build a customer based PDK/DE system. That's pretty much where Intel Foundry failed before since their customers were previously "captive", they didn't know very well how to deal with external customer. GP brings all of that to the table. Intel has a monstrous fab footprint and my past experience tells me that Uncle Sam pays a pretty good premium for being "secret".

Go ahead and throw insults and stupid comments. You really need to get over the fact that GF didn't crash and burn when you left. I am not saying they are doing great, but YOU expected them to fail within a year (just look at all of the past comments in the last year).

Let's see how this all plays out.

AMD is doing so great under new CEO and better foundry partner

Based on GP's records, one’d imagine that he’ll keep naming conference rooms after himself and will beat the drum for “next node is on track to full production next month” everywhere he goes, helping INTL to go IBM Microelectronics way. And watch his wiki site for more accomplishments.

Why have a CTO when you have no R&D? Global is going to milk old tech until they have to shut down/sell. Who wants to work on old tech? While I don't think Dr. Gary is anything special, I can see why he would leave Global. Honestly I don't know why anyone able to secure another job stays.

Guy was directly responsible leader for 7nm at GF which failed. Hundreds get laid off while he got another year in office and a golden severance package. CTO had no accomplishments to his name other than giving speeches in various industry forums, never did anything at GF or IBM. Intel is smart enough to know this and has not hired him as CTO. He will be kicked out in a year from Intel.

Great news for GF. Now he can stagnate Intel long enough for GF to surpass

This is one of about a thousand reasons GF employees should be worried. The place will make it to the end of 2021, if they're extremely lucky. It has all the signs of an employer in desperate financial straits.

Rumors are Intel is preparing for a massive layoffs so this kinda makes sense. God knows it isn't for his 7nm expertise.
