Were you told or given any hints about your assoc getting let go? I’m curious because it’s been slow the past few weeks (for everyone actually, due to the holidays), I asked my manager for more tasks but I got nothing, and this happened.

@12sRCfX8-1bos - Your manager at least had the decency to tip you off and let you know that it could happen so that you could prepare (as long as it wasn't anything malicious to the company that would jeopardize your package). Depending on the way and the circumstances it was communicated to you, that Manager was put into a difficult situation. I would still consider them a friend.
My manager actually told me back in January that if cuts were coming later in the year, my name was added to the RIF list. The mgr told one of my co-workers the exact same thing. Our group only had to let one person go this go round and unfortunately, it was him. I suppose I am next in line though, so it won’t be a surprise
I was a VP & 26 year veteran and part of the 4/2016 RiF. My manager knew he was getting RiF’d and called me at the office right after it happened to him. He told me that he’d be ok, and that I was doing a good job and that I should be inheriting his portfolio and direct reports. I did inherit everything he said, for about 26 minutes, until I got the call into the conference room. I had a bad feeling, called my wife, grabbed some things that were important, walked into that conference room and said To my managers boss who was caught off guard ‘So, this is where it ends right? And, You must be from HR! They were surprised that I was so bold and assertive. I survived many RIFs and knew how these things went down, so much that I flipped the script on them and was able to not get escorted out, got my lunch from the fridge, went back to my desk to grab a few more things, and say a few goodbyes. I knew not to say/do anything stupid that would jeopardize my severance package. It was and still a great Firm that has given me everything I have, especially the memories, relationships, confidence and experiences that have prepared me to take on just about any role anywhere else. Great Firm, just pockets of mismanagement and nepotism that happens when new regimes come in and clean house to replace you with either their own or just younger / cheaper hires.
Your manager was the one to pick you and he knew a month ago itself when he gave your name.
Your name was put on the RIF list at least 6 months ago.
