Thread regarding Morgan Stanley layoffs

Why do people work long hours at Morgan?

"why do people work weekends and long hours?"

  • Almost everyone is short staffed. For some people, if they don't work longer hours, the work will not be done.
  • Bureaucracy. It's really hard to get things done at Morgan. And our new religion, Agile, is unfortunately not looking like it's the antidote to bureaucracy, and so far is not making things better for most people and is generally increasing negative sentiment, as much of it is just adding more process.
  • A lot of deployments need to happen in the evenings, so you're stuck at work. Good luck if your change doesn't work, now you're getting home at 10 pm.
  • There is a culture that makes people feel like they're inadequate, so they try to compensate by working longer hours. This whole transformation business is going to only increase people's feeling of inadequacy, and many will just leave to find some place else where not every aspect of how you do work is dictated by efficiency obsessed managers.
  • Almost everyone has some level of anxiety about losing their job, because it's quite common at Morgan to lose your job. That makes some people think that if they work hard (aka long hours) they'll be spared.
  • These are a minority, but some people just like to work long hours.

I am here for 10 years and what keeps me going is people. most of them are very smart yet humble and pleasure to work with. Going any other place may even double the money but somehow that point hasn't come

Cannot disagree with most of the things you said about people working long hours .

I worked for Morgan Stanley for nearly 30 years. Those were the best years of my working career. Everywhere else I've been or I am at - 'the quality is not as good, the people are not as smart or as polished, the culture is not the same.' It is in our DNA to strive for excellence and be part of the best and the brightest team. I was RiF'd in April 2016 and riding into the sunset at another company now. I am being paid better and my commute is much shorter, but I don't have the same pride that I had when I was at MS. The thing I miss most are the people. 30+ years later, they are still some of my closest friends. #MSBlue
