Has anyone received a letter from General Motors letting them know that they are eligible for TAA benefits? I can't seem to get anywhere with my Michigan Works office. They keep telling me that I am not eligible until I receive a letter from GM. How can I get my hands on this letter?

The petition didn't get approved until the end of July.... 7/31/19! So, if anyone is still looking at this site, it is possible you can get paperwork filed by the end of the month if its valid for 6 months from the date but I'm not certain. Don't OVERLOOK this and spread the word! I didn't get a letter either BUT kept seeing info and following up about it and as long as you worked at the Tech Center (via GM or several contract companies listed) you likely qualify! It is a lifelong benefit for schooling (college beyond bachelors, masters, etc.) so fill the paperwork out, and use it when you need to. Next year, or in 10 years! It's your benefit, and the best kept secret out there! If you are still unemployed, and start school or on the job style training, they will pay you unemployment or make-up the difference. Not to mention several other worthwhile benefits to mention quickly!
I just received another letter today. Has anyone gone to the meeting to see if it worthwhile? I found a new job quickly, but make less money. I am thinking that I would not receive any benefits.
I did not receive a letter, however I did call HR and requested a job verification letter, which I provided to the unemployment office representative and it was accepted. I will start school next semester. Please call your HR rep before this year is ended so that you will be able to receive money for school.
PS. just because you didn't get a letter doesn't mean you aren't eligible. If you got laid off from Warren you are likely eligible if you don't have a new job that pays 80% of what you made at WTC.
I went to the meeting. Some interesting info. If you don't have a job or even if you have a new job and make less than 80% of what you made at GM you are eligible for free training and extra pay/extended unemployment and health care/COBRA subsidies.
Even if you took the voluntary buyout you are eligible for these benefits as the govt considers you laid off because of trade adjustment. And if you were contract you are eligible for these benefits. Many contract agencies are not sending the letter so I hope people look into this and use it to help themselves out if they are in need.
You must go to the Macomb/St.Clair Michigan Works office for more information. All other Michigan Works offices will have little or no information. This is because TAA was created within the city of Warren. Also, if you got this letter/flyer from GM, you WILL need to attend a 4 hour information meeting. There is one scheduled for this coming Monday if you work quickly.

PETITION PROCESS OVERVIEW
To obtain TAA reemployment services and benefits a group of workers must first file a petition with the U.S Department of Labor's Trade Adjustment Assistance Program (TAA) requesting certification as workers adversely affected by foreign trade. Once a complete petition is filed, the Office of Trade Adjustment Assistance (OTAA) initiates an investigation to determine whether a group of workers meets the group eligibility requirements. If the worker group meets the group eligibility criteria, a group eligibility certification will be issued. This certifies that the workers of the group are eligible to apply for Trade Adjustment Assistance benefits.
After a group certification is issued, each worker in the group must then individually apply for services and benefits through their local American Job Center. TAA case managers at the local American Job Center will issue a determination of the workers' individual eligibility for TAA benefits.
Who may file a petition?
A petition may be filed by any of the following: a group of three or more workers, an employer of a group of workers, a Union, a State Workforce Official, a American Job Center Operator/Partner, or another Duly Authorized Representative. OTAA will initiate an investigation when a complete petition is filed by any of these parties.

Thanks for the response. I didn’t get a letter and the people at Michigan Works are telling me that they don’t have anything to do with the letter nor do they know how I would get the letter. This is very frustrating.
My letter came from the Michigan Works office Jan 2020 is the deadline after that eligibility is done.
