Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

Full page newspaper ad slams Macy's employment practices and high benefits costs

The 11/22/2019 San Francisco Chronicle is ran a full-page add on page A-5 with the heading,

"What Happened to the Magic?"

The rest of the ad:

Macy's Employment Practices Leave Employees in Poverty

The ad then presents the case of a mother who works full time at Macy's and can't afford the healthcare:

"As the company has accelerated its policy of cost-shifting the burden of health care premiums onto its employees, plans have become unaffordable, requiring monthly employee contributions of as much as $1000 a month or more."

The ad says employees are prepared to strike, but encourages customers to call JG to avoid this outcome.

United Food and Commercial Workers Local 5, AFL-CIO sponsored the ad

Before I left a high-paying job at Macy's, I realized that I couldn't afford the healthcare this year with the new changes and price structure. I sympathize with anyone trying to pay for healthcare who works for Macy's.

"Did Union Square follow through with the threatened strike this weekend?"

Sorry for the late response. For the record, and on the off chance that you'll see this, no, there was no strike. Macy's took out its own full-page ad that said the company was trying to work with the union, and the ad listed all of the ways Macy's has helped San Francisco throughout the years. especially in the fight against AIDS. It looked like Union Square was a huge holiday destination once again too, and hundreds showed up for the tree-lighting ceremony (plus to see the adoptable puppies and kitties).

As much as I hate Macy's after getting laid off, I do appreciate the workers and don't want to see the company fail because of a strike, so I hope everyone can find a way to play nice.

You would see managers in the floor more if we weren’t doing the following things

  • DMET forms to fix all the scheduling probs
  • Endless conference calls to talk about business.
  • meetings to talk about our “action plan” and how we are going to achieve goals
  • on a register at AYS when it’s not your department
  • on a register in an FOB you don’t oversee
  • doing go backs in RTW when your not the RTW manager
  • Fufillment packing on the dock

I could go on and on? Wanna hear more?

Unions only care about themselves and getting your cash. If you can’t in a tight labor market negotiate better pay for yourself it’s on you. Unions are really irrelevant nowadays unless you just hate to work and need to be protected for being mediocre.

Anonymous, yes it was my manager. And she was on the sales floor. Although I am non-union, I emphathize with employees who have loyally supported Macy's, but recently are now paying the cost in greatly reduced wages, benefits. Many of us have had our work doubled/tripled for less wages/benefits. The "Magic of Macy's" was the employees.

I find the post about an "incredibly rude" manager to be suspect. On any given day do you ever see a manager?

Whats the point of a union when you are earning a poverty wage?

Yes, the union placed the ad, but the complaints also resonate with the rest of us non-union employees. I have an office job with Macy's Technology and can't afford the healthcare for my family. Instead of increasing benefits, Macy's keeps taking them away.

After several holiday seasons, I finally left. Even that day, management told me I was exceptional with the customers, and in increasing customer loyalty. However, I was required to "support" a manager I who was incredibly rude to customers. Her attitude was so unnecessary, and the customers don't deserve that. I could not support my manager's extreme rudeness, so I quit. I had already taken a pay cut, and most days I covered 4 areas by myself. The customer does not know our floor staff and checkout stands were cut in half, or about our pay cuts this year. So, guess who pays for the downsizing – the employees. I even had an assistant manager tell me the reason my sales increased was because staff was cut in half! Not because of how I took care of the customer. We didn't have a union where I worked; basicially no benefits except a discount that was less than what I would have paid at Nordstrom's. I and my family have shopped at Macy's for 40 years, and I have been promoting Macy's in ALL the years I worked. But not anymore. The managers clearly don't care about the customer, nor the employee, and I want nothing to do with Macy's.

Macy's Alderwood Mall in Lynnwood, WA. Former executive from that store, now retired. Who wants to call the Fire Marshall?

Well of course the ad was placed by the union whose members have a contract with Macys. The San Francisco store is unionized. Typical re-negotiation fodder. Why doesn't the union spend that advertising money on its members instead of an ad that no one will see? Who reads newspapers anymore?

Just have the local Fire marshals go into Macy's stores on Thanksgiving. None of them meet ADA requirements for safety with aisles packed with merchandise. Can't even get down an aisle with a stroller. I know a local contractor that worked in a Macy's north of Seattle. Big Macy's in Lynnwood. He said the store would be closed if low voltage line work was inspected . Go for it!

The Undertaker could not care less. Goal is to reduce costs to $0 (with the exception of his merry boardroom bandits ) so the "optics" look better for future takeover. Can you imagine what those platinum parachutes look like?
