US land have just lost their guaranteed hours. In a nutshell they only get paid if they are on the rig

Good thing i retired from Baker last October so i don't have to go thru this again! Living off social security, military retirement and ND unemployment plus plenty in the 401K. Life is sweet with nothing to worry about. Up by noon every dad.

Weatherford has done it. Laid off a good portion of their field hands and offered them to move to “contract” or casual worker. Not only taking a -30% in hourly rate. But removing the guaranteed hours. And the insurance is even more expensive for a worse quality coverage. (You will get better coverage on a prison ship!) I ran the numbers and to make the same amount that I made this year with 250 days on the rig this year I will have to work 324 days on the rig just to make the same amount. So instead of a 20-10 rotation, I would have to work 27 on and 4 off. For $150,000 a year. A 20-10 you can make $115,000 a year gross, but you will be expected to do more for less. And since they cannot even guaranteed that. You are expected to pay for your own travel, but they want you to put a app on your phone to keep track of where you are. Oh yeah and them releasing your work and salary history to a company based in Central America that in 2017 was responsible for a breech in data that effected 70 million Americans without your permission is downright borderline illegal. Not only they laid off a week before Christmas they placed your personal data at risk. I have made the decision to walk away.

The oil patch pays peanuts compared to years ago. Let’s face it rig work is a dead end going nowhere

Great, quit to go contract. The drawback is that on that model you still only get paid for the days you leave the house (mostly all rig anyway) and then you'll have to pay your own Social Security, pay for some type of insurance if you choose. If you have not recently looked at insurance rates they are running about $2,500 to $3,200 per MONTH depending on your exact needs if you have a family. That's a steep hit to your income straight off the top of what you would collect as a consultant. It's not like the old days when consultants raked in way more than employees. That doesn't seem to be the case these days. You can earn more with the smaller companies, but no continuous steady work, or you can take less money and hope to earn more from one of the bigger companies. You might actually end up earning less in take home pay as a consultant.

The only real plus side is that maybe there is psychic victory by 'sticking it to the man'. Take a good look before you leave the company so that you make the best decision for yourself. Nah, I'm not a manager, but I have seen both sides of the fence and will stay where I'm at and hope to keep my job and ride out the uncertainty until the next boom [or maybe not].

People in the office should only be paid when they go into the office. Needs a clock in / out system to stop cheating. Bunch of clowns.

Remember now that they have taken away the guaranteed time you are no longer on call. Don’t sit around waiting for them to call, let the coordinators attempt to coordinate.

This was a big mistake. Baker will pay for this. They think they have low market share now.

We have just taken a 20% cut in our day rate. Now this! This will cost most DD’s 25k a year. Enough is enough. What is next? I will be looking.

They need to do it. Nothing will change with Baker. What they just did shows they don’t give a toss about the field hands. The decision to do what they did wasn’t made over night. It has been in the works for a while.

DDs in the RMD are threatening to go contract and take rigs with them. If that happens we won't have very many rigs left up here. It's time to get out.

They call it zero hour contract - you get paid when you work. It’s not much different to how they pay fruit pickers. Time to drop this garbage if you have pride in your work.
