Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

'Twas The Night Before Christmas....

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the store,
customers departed, merchandise left on the floor;
Colleagues and leaders, all heading home for the night,
in hopes that a day without Macy's would make it alright;
Later in the evening nestled all snug in their beds,
while visions of announcements danced in their heads;
And Paula in her ‘kerchief, and Jeff in his cap,
had planned the restructuring and settle in for a nap

When out in the field there arose such a clatter,
region, district and stores leaders all in a chatter;
To Skype and Team Meetings they flew like a flash,
speculation, conjecture, guesswork, and hunches did clash;
As has been our process for the last several years,
struggling sales mean closings, and not a few tears;
If DM is your title, then the Hunger Games you will play,
competing against peers as jobs go away;
If district or regional jobs you do hold,
then its time to update profiles, if tenured and old

Come next month, what to our wondering eyes will appear,
but severance packages, and scrambles for jobs we hold dear;
In the distance a tractor all red and white flies out into the night
Signing bonus in hand, the driver must be young Harry in flight;
More rapidly than eagles, to Q3 earnings the analysts came,
And Jeff whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
“Now! J.P., now! Deutsche now! BOA and Goldman,
“On! Morningstar on! Stanley on! Evercore and Barclays

To the top of the market, ThredUp, Backstage, Blue Mercury all,
vendor direct, hold and flow, each heralded during the call;
But the panacea analysts wanted to hear Jeff and Paula say
is the one pending discussion next February Investors Day

Jeff with a sleigh full of plans and strategies new,
none of them meaning well, for work life balance and you;
Real estate visions, discounter dreams, used clothing too,
$500 million in accelerated saving means job will be few

If the music stops in two weeks and there’s no chair left for you,
consider carefully your choices before deciding what to do;
Life is short and jobs shouldn’t require all of your time,
working at Macy’s was rarely sublime, and will only decline

For the past several years this yearly post has been accurate.
This year though was a lot more cuts than I even anticipated....

No one should be taking PTO the two weeks before Christmas thru inventory reconciliation. This time of year all hands are needed. FYI, senior leaders–the weeks post Christmas thru inventory are much more challenging than "the last 10 Days." Large number of transactions, but little to show due to returns, inventory prep, and a dramatic reduction in staffing. District Leaders need to be in the stores assisting and not pointing. District Leaders need to be helpful and not a hindrance. One last point: If inventory is so important, EVERYONE should participate in the prep. vs. emailing the stores presale goals. Happy New Year!!!

Agree it's all a show the 2 weeks up to christmas, stores not doing what they really need to do to drive sales. Merchandise setups in wrong places "until after the visit" because management has already walked the floor. Go backs not done because the z-bars full of merchandise are hidden in fitting rooms and stockrooms. Boxes of shipment hidden so the back areas look cleared.

You know what would hep reduce the level of rumor and speculation during this critical time between Christmas and announcements next week? If almost every senior leader didn't take off the two weeks between Christmas and the week of announcements. Instead of visiting stores during the two weeks leading into the holiday and derailing everyone who is trying to take care of the customer and keep up with the huge Omni activity, these leaders should take these weeks off and stay in place during the transition weeks when their leadership would be more useful.

We have most of our regional team on vacation for two weeks along with half of the district leaders and store managers and the only thing that anyone in stores or the remaining leaders are doing is talking about these rumors. Not many of the few remaining leaders are focused on recovering from the holiday or preparing for inventory.

Here's a hint, if we have so many stores being covered by acting or temp managers as well as other roles, perhaps we might want to manage how many leaders are allowed to take two weeks off immediately after the holiday. We should understand that our stores are still very busy until after the New Year and kids go back to school, shouldn't we?

I wish people would talk only of they know something.... Most of the NC DMs were placed in stores... not pushed out

Yes, correct money is the key factor. I was part of the IT group let go this year. I feel for all of you sitting on pins and needles waiting for the word. But another door will open for you after Macy's. I have never been happier! I actually enjoyed the Holidays.

So how many managers will be left per store ? Will it effect operation/ ap management? Seems like if your making money your a target. Doing away with the point system was a quick way of getting high paying associates out the door quicker. Seems like downsizing plus cost cutting to rapidly get the company to look like the shiny t–d it is for a buyer. LnT did this.

Crazy cuts coming from what it sounds like. Might be going down to only two regions like the old days.

Macy’s DM jobs are going away . Let the count down begin . The NC pushes DMs out the door to avoid severance . They got each district down to only 2-3 out of 8 .

I dont know... the last two years were more specific... this one is vague.... are DMs going away? Or just being reduced? How many stores/districts/regions go away? What is the realignment?
