Cummins had a good thing going as a DBU model, then they got GREEDY and destroyed a great system and it's people.

Best day of my life when I was let go

I started with Cummins at a privately owned distributor. Hands down best job i have ever held. Became a corporate distributor a few years ago and things seemed as though it would work out.
Was kept on as a resident tech when the recent branch closures took place and still thought it would work out.
The new model of corporate before customer simply isn’t a good fit for me or the customers that have fed me and my family for The last 20 years.
I’ve moved to a competitor distributor and would like to see Cummins continue their customer second approach.

Cummins is a giant sh– hole of a place to work / be employed by these days. They don't care about their employees, they don't care about safety, and they surely don't care about providing a good place of employment. Everything this preach and say is horse sh–. The one and only thing they care about it money and the second they don't get there money they'll start f—ing people over.

One theory that makes sense is Cummins is looking to merge with or sell to a major OEM. Most major OEM's have dealerships where Cummins has distributors so there wouldn't be a need to keep the distributors open. By downsizing distribution you can sell those assets independently make a little money. Plus when you cut all your cost out of the business it will give you stock a boost due to temporary inflation in profits. Cummins would bring a bigger bargaining chip to the table when the stock is high than the other way around. If this isn't their intent the direction they are going is will destroy any chance of recovering their business.

Worked for Cummins for 15 years am a top technician. Pay/benefits are good but not worth it. I’ve seen what has been coming for some time now. They are structuring like other large companies. It doesn’t work well but they have only one thing in mind, the stakeholders. Their manufacturing mentality says: lay people off when their is a slow down and hire when things pick up. Make money for the stock holder. That does not work in distribution. Gotten rid of so much talent and experience lately. Technician success rate is probably 1 out of 25 that come in the door is worth keeping and takes many years to groom. You can’t simply hire someone and they hit the ground running when things pick up like in a plant manufacturing environment. The distributors when privately owned did quite well, profits were good. Cummins saw this as missed revenue they could pick up and bought all distributors. Now the way they do things they are not nearly as profitable as hoped. So let’s let a lot of really good people go. Big bonuses for top managers as they are saving the company so much money. The company is a sh– hole that no longer aligns with my values and morales. Everyone is just a number, always known that and this proves it. They sure like to tell you how much they appreciate and need you until they don’t.

Announced 2000 salary lay offs without mention of the hourly people they would let go. Most of what I've seen is hourly. Dont believe cummins is living their core values.

Our family is devastated. Happened this week in Harrisburg, Pa. Years of experience out the door. This isn’t the same company it was 30 years ago. Cummins spends money to hire a Hatchet Company who knows nothing about the company or its employees to come in and get rid of people who put their hearts and souls into helping build this company over the years, and for what, just to be kicked to the curb.

I wonder why they would no consider a furlough process. I personally would be more than willing to sacrafice a days pay a week to keep my job and preserve the jobs of others. I understand reduction of redundant roles and closing locations that are less profitable, but the latest action by Cummins seems like so much more than just that, and has many concerned about the actual health of the organization. Every employee taking one furlough day a week seems like a very large cash infusion for the company, and would demonstrate to the upper management the loyalty and sacrifice its employees are willing to make.

Worked for the distributor side of the buisness for 28+ years. We all thought when Cummins took over all the US distributors it would be much better. Boy were we wrong! You're nothing but a number to them. They cram diversity & LBGQ c-ap down your throat. Best thing that ever happened to me was taking early retirement. Glad to be out of that sh– hole company.

I have seen mediocre skill people live happily in Cummins Columbus for many years. Not sure about skill levels at other sites. In the end its all politics. If they don't like you personally, then they will set you up for layoff in the system. Some may even call this appraisal rating or backstabbing. One of major function of HR is to be ready to support management for the layoff season. Understand the signals and be prepared for layoff. My advice is get the severance package and move to a new job quickly. It will be the biggest bonus of your life.

They got me. New engine sales are down but I worked in Aftermarket parts which was still bringing the dough. They cut a handful of employees I consider essential to serving our distributors & OEMs with parts needed for repairs and production lines for OEMs. Sure there’s severance but no matter if we take it or not they are marking us ALL unhirable in the future. So years down the road even we can not apply for even another part of Cummins business. I really loved my job. And seems so many other companies are announcing layoffs in this industry so I don’t think most of us even know what we are gonna do next. I wonder if there will be additional waves. And if it goes to hourly employees I wonder if they will get any package at all. It’s just a terrible feeling when you excel at your work, have never been let go and then you are that quickly disposable. They’re still profiting. Just not returning money to major stockholders are the excessive profits they over promised them. Thanks, Capitalism

Cummins' plants are a terrible place to work. Inept management that constantly turns over. However, corporate isn't bad as it is a fantasy land of self -importance.

Cummins (the manufacturer) is pushing a reorg at their recently (within the last 4 years) acquired distribution business/es attempting to centralize the existing consolidated regions into one centrally run business unit and eliminating overlapping roles and in the process eliminating many positions both hourly and salaried with the end goal (and hope) of a more streamlined and profitable distribution network. Mind you, the distribution business is a retail operation with unique demographics and business relationships with some very large customers throughout N.A. Cummins (the manufacturer) is a global leader in engine manufacturing, and very good at it, however, they Do Not understand the retail aspect of the business (even with the aid of analytics) and try to push processes and business model ideas to the distribution business to try to mold the business into a fairytale One Cummins way of doing business, in the process changing the way business is done with the customer and in many areas leaving customers very unhappy and opening opportunities for these customers to look elsewhere for their products. In short, this venture will probably become a heavy burden to Cummins and the distribution business will end up being sold back to individual ownership groups which are more familiar and better adept at running the retail operations and fostering the customer relationships needed to sustain long term growth and success for Cummins as a whole.

Mike Pence's brother Ed retired/ left the company last year (2018). Rich Freeland the company VP & Board member reporting directly to Tim Linebarger retired back in October (he saw the writing on the wall) and got out whilst the going was good. Although Cummins really really caters to all the minorities, ethnicities, and LBGTQ classes for 'diversity' but Cummins is heartless, Laying people off around the holidays. And It doesn't matter what your performance is... if HR can create a paper trail and/or put someone on PIP they"ll create unachievable goals no one can meet and lay them off. Ridiculous. I've known too many former co-workers and associates. I worked 12 years for Cummins (with all great reviews) until I got a new manager who tried putting me on PIP (for unjust reasons) and that's when I left. I am Much happier now :-)

Guys! question!!

We are 62,000 employees global including contractors, hourly, everybody! This layoff is only for exempt for now... Question!

How many exempts are we world wide? maybe a ratio would do. Let's say 50% are exempt... or 40%...
Next question is how many total in North America VS how many exempts in north america only (which is the highest paid; and Europe of course).

Thank you in advance!

Let me say they knew this was coming back when they offered retirement packages and they didn't get the result they were hoping for. Don't think for a second they are only making decisions now on how they will restructure the business 6 weeks out from year end, these decisions were made long ago, they have just decided they will announce it now to stop a plummet in share prices.
There is much talk of loyalty and looking after employees but look how poorly this has been executed across the globe. I would expect redundancy to start by end of this month and completed mid to late December depending on your pay cycle.

For a company coming off from two years of record profits and decent first and second quarters, the very concept if cutting exempt jobs is revolting. Greed is the proper word.
