Thread regarding Lowe's Cos. layoffs

Losing one of your two days off for Thanksgiving

In my store about half the full timers are having to work 5 days the week of Thanksgiving.
Paid for 48 hours, but work 40.
normally one holiday plus work four days

Everyone effected is so disgusted, and some people not effected. This is so sleazy

As a result the effected employees are all slowing down, way down, minimal downstocking, ignoring missing price tags

I don’t any company that has done this

WAY TO GO LOWES - FIND A WAY TO HIT A NEW LOW

SHOULD HAVE been made optional

The company used to do a holiday payout equal to 32 hours as a bonus if you worked the week of a holiday. A few years back they changed it to be 4 floating holidays that you took as days off. You lose them like vacation hours if you don’t take them. Corporate must have seen that those days off are actually pay, and that if the full timers work 40 and get 48 hours of straight pay (because of the make up day off) that means they can move hours into a time when they need them for traffic without any additional penalty.
Employees are tools to be used as needed. Get used to it.

They should have asked employees so the people who wanted the pay would get it and the ones who wanted an extra day off would get that. Might not be perfect but less unhappy people.

People in my store have always tried to work 5 days so they get paid for 48 hours. I don’t understand why there is such an uproar that you will get your usual two days off, with one of them being paid. Let’s say that again....you are not working any more than usual and you will not have to work on Thanksgiving. In fact, Lowe’s is paying you for 4 or 8 hours to spend time with your family.

As one person already commented, I’m sure that will eventually come to an end as well. So enjoy the PAID time off with your family and stop complaining.

"overtime" is pay at 1.5x your base wage. they arent scheduling anyone for overtime. 40 hours WORKED gets paid at base hourly wage....the 8 extra hours are paid out simply as holiday pay at base wage. like it or not this makes perfect sense for retailers to do this. they have an "obligation" and theyre meeting it by paying everyone for thanksgiving while also making sure full timers are working their full 40.

lowes is one of the few retailers that still dont open on thanksgiving...and those that DO open on thanksgiving dont even pay their employees extra for it...its just a normal day. i have come from other retailers...not only was thanksgiving treated as a regular work day but christmas wasnt a paid holiday either...was just a regular scheduled day off for the week.

cross your fingers...its only a matter of time before marvin has his number crunches figure out just what the savings will be to cut both days as paid holidays.

I know some won’t mind the extra money but full-timers should be scheduled for 32 hours for the week with Thanksgiving automatically paid (8 hours). Your store is giving scheduling overtime and burning through payroll. It’s poor planning like this that has Marvin/corporate wanting to take control with customer centric scheduling.

I'm off three days that week. Sat/Sun and then Thursday for holiday.

You should be getting 3 days off that week. At our store they adjusted the schedules to make sure that every employee got 2 days off and Thanksgiving. What kind of soulless individuals run your store?

I've worked 40 hours that week under the old Lowe's also. In fact the last four years I've had two 32 hours (40 with the holiday pay) and two 40 hours (48). I'd rather have the extra cash to be honest.

if they just took away the holiday pay i would see your point. but for some people working 40 hours and getting the pay for 48 hours is also seen favorably. past years you worked 32 and got paid for 40. so its all relative in that context.

only downside is i see this as the initial step to eliminating the holiday pay next year.

but on the surface is does make full sense for a a retailer to do this during the busy holiday shopping season kickoff week. and of course theyre doing this because of all of marvins bad decisions that has led to a mass exodus of employees so now stores are too thin to give 3 days off if they wanted to!
