Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Check jobs website

To those claiming that all Kmarts are closing soon, please Check the Sears/Kmart jobs website. Several Kmarts are hiring store managers, assistant managers, even pharmacists. A pharmacist is a High-Paying job requiring a medical degree. They get Paid $40-$50 per HOUR. Why would they be hiring jobs like that if they are planning to close all the stores? They will surely close some but not all, at least as of now. After all, a pharmacist making $40 per Hour, is not going to be used by a liquidator to hall shelving around, so it's pretty certain that any Kmart that has an opening for pharmacists probably isn't closing Any Time soon. And many of these job listings are recent. As mentioned by others, the stores with only Seasonal jobs listed are more likely to close. But I am fairly certain that any store hiring a pharmacist, store manager, or any higher-scale is probably no closing yet.

  1. P. cant agree with what you said. Our Kmart closed in January this year. In August of last year we hired a new pharmacy tech and a few assistants. In October last year we were told that we were closing. So they will hire people and then close the store. Pharmacy shut down in early Nov.

As a matter of fact, we hired people right up to the closing announcement. I still remember a man who started on the day we were told we were closing. What a welcome to Kmart. Hi, welcome to Kmart. Your job will end in three months.

Realize that just because the company is suffering, that does not mean that the company is going to stop hiring 100%. Because this company is in its final death throes, people who are able to flee and have the self-determination to flee are fleeing – in large numbers – to greener, more stable pastures and guess what? This company needs to replace those people in order to function.

A healthy retailer like Walmart and Target has pretty high turnover rates, and that's with higher pay, better benefits, stability, etc. It's just the nature of retail. However, Sears and Kmart's turnover rates are simply off the charts and probably have the upper management and HR departments of Walmart, Target, etc. very thankful for their turnover numbers in comparison to Transformco's turnover rate. Lots of Transformco employees have left, many more are in the process of leaving. All of those job postings are a result of simply replacing someone who left Transformco with the hope that somebody desperate gets s—ered into working for Transformco. It's highly doubtful that a single job posting on jobs.sears.com is created as a result of expansion of the company or its divisions.

Also realize that NONE of the jobs posted by Transformco – from cashier to regional manager and everything in between – are long-term. Sure, you may get a management position that sounds pretty good on paper but how long will it really last before you either leave on your own (after you realize how dead-end the job and the company is) or get the boot?

Excellent point. There will be some closings, but the stores hiring positions like pharmacists, managers, etc., are probably not closing soon. Pharmacists are usually just licensed in 1 state, so they can't easily be transferred. So if they are going through the effort of hiring one, they probably won't be closing that location.

Stores are always hiring. It's common to see active job postings like this right up until a store liquidation is announced. HE doesn't tell stores "hey, you're closing next, so we're not going to let you fill your vacant pharmacist position." Stores are left totally in the dark, except for what common-sense pieces they can put together on their own.

The people posting the jobs have no idea a store is closing until it is announced. Just like you.

Or it could be that their previous store managers, pharmacists, etc. all left as they saw the writing on the wall, and the HR either knows they have to keep up appearances until their DM walks in to tell them they're closing with the same form letter every other store gets, or they are really deluded enough to believe everything is fine.

My neighbor is a pharmacist and says that pharmacists avoid Kmart because of instability of future employment.

My neighbor is a pharmacist and makes over $100,000 a year. She says it's well known in the pharmacist community to avoid Kmart because of the uncertainty of future employment and the closing of stores.

Maybe because current managers see the writing on the wall and jump ship? And corporate is so desperate to have someone there that they are advertising for a position? Then 2 months down the road they close the store and the new manager suffers.

I wrote a post but it's not showing. Essentially said the stores post these positions until official closings are announced.

This is a good point. While even store managers could potentially get moved to another store in the event of a closing, there are so few pharmacies left in Kmarts that moving a pharmacist, to another nearby store with a pharmacy is nearly impossible. Pharmacists are only usually licensed in 1 state anyway, so they can't just be transferred to another state.
Long story short, if a Kmart is going through all the hassle and openly hiring a pharmacist, that location is very unlikely to close soon. There are several pharmacist jobs listed on their website. And this is for actual certified pharmacists, not "pharmacy technicians" which are glorified Cashiers, in reality.

Just because they are hiring doesn't mean they are going to be filled by anyone. Who would work for this company at this point?

They will all close eventually. Just slower than predicted on here. For the record the Somerville MA KMart had manager and other job postings like that right up until the closure was officially announced by the city.

Let me repeat, announced by the city of Somerville. Although a recent official Transform closing list had come out a few days before, this location was not in it. The mayor of Somerville publicly acknowledged the closure then it was on.

Even a dummy could tell from his announcement that this has been in the works for awhile.

If I suspect that they are going to lay me off and hire an younger person to my role, what should I do?

The majority of the pharmacy job postings are for part time pharmacy techs. Per Zip Recruiter, the average wage for a tech is $9.13 to $19.71/hour with a national average of $15.00. Most likely Kmart is paying techs the same wage as associates, which is a far cry from $50.00 an hour.
