What went wrong at Macy’s? A clue lies in plain sight, in a manifesto penned many decades ago by Sam M. Walton, Walmart’s founder. He wrote:

“There is only one boss, and whether that person shines shoes for a living or heads up the biggest corporation in the world, the boss remains the same. It’s the customer…who decides whether a business is going to succeed or fail. The customer can fire everybody in the company…simply by spending money somewhere else. Everything we do…is directed with this one objective clearly in mind—pleasing the customer.”

Macy’s response to economic stress has been mostly flailing attempts to lure more bodies into stores and then stripping the company of so much of its assets that just about the only thing going for the company, besides its massive edifice in midtown Manhattan, is the annual Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Today’s top department store is a tech company. Macy’s is making a huge mistake in cutting tech, while keeping stores.
