Thread regarding Sears layoffs

STAC CLOSING

They are apparently closing STAC because the Techs do not need them and the property is worth a fortune , just look on google maps , why keep it , the techs have all the information we had , why does STAC have to hold their hands thru every repair , . If they are truly Techs , they have the info and data STAC has ! wake up !!

They have finally laid off all STAC technicians now. I can assure you there will be a majority of field techs out there that will not have a clue on how to repair your appliance. For the most part they will guess at what part needs to be replaced only to find out the expensive part they just ordered will not fix the problem. For the most part they did not attempt to trouble-shoot the problem or they are to lazy to actually use the information provided to them on their phones that will guide them through all trouble-shooting process's. It allows them to run the machine itself in a diagnostic mode which would break down the area to look for repair, not to mention step by step testing points. The field techs for the most part just got used to calling the STAC techs to "just give them the answer and the part numbers".....this way if a recall occurred, they would tell their manager, that's what STAC determined. Now that STAC is out of there, you will see many field techs go away....more than likely it will be the one's that never knew what they were doing in the first place. Not all blame can be put on these techs as Sears does very little in training for their field techs. You better know your stuff before applying and hope they provide a decent start wage for your knowledge ! All we can do at this point is move on and wait to see just how long it is before they sell that gold mine they are sitting on in Round Rock, TX. Without the STAC group there, that building will no longer provide that great cash income that Sears has seen in history.

Still hasn't been any layoffs at stac. but today i heard some of the guys that work there talking about everybody having their hours cut in half or even more in some instances. one of them was saying that there have been about 10 people that have quit stac in the last few week. i guess the goal is to cut all they hours until they all just leave on their own.
they got an email from home services that said they hours was going to stay cut for at least 2 more months or something. just in time for Christmas, they all get cut hours.
i'm sure it's just a matter of time before all those hour cuts start making way across the building and we all going to be looking for something else some of us already are

The property where STAC is is worth a lot, that's not debatable. But STAC also isn't the only segment of business in that building. In fact, they're a rather small part of the business that's there. The company outright owns a gold mine with that property and it would likely be one of the last places sold.

about the layoffs.. uh... well, there hasnt been any. not last week, not today.
oh wait. There was 1 last week but he wasnt really even in STAC, it was more a clerical position and he spent most of the day doing nothing.

The company has been trying to get field techs into a position to access information that stac has, but the bigger issue is the experience that the people at stac has, that cannot be put on a screen in most cases. but then, stac has been picked apart over the years and most of the people that really knew what they were doing have already been run off, forced out or have died. the company wont properly train field techs, they wont properly train stac either. and it shows.

Putting the decisions back in the hands of the techmanagers and techs is a terrible idea. most of them would rather just replace something anyway. that will get even more out of hand without stac standing in the way. an id–t should be able to see that coming from a mile away.

OT but relevant maybe: STAC, A&E, appliance repair in general is going the way of the dodo. Most consumer line manufacturers are no longer supplying replacement parts for their appliances beyond the warranty period. Whirlpool has a line of built in microwaves, for example, for which they supply NO replacement parts. If a unit fails in the first year they replace it with a new unit. If it fails in the 2nd and subsequent years the customer buys another new $800 microwave. (Presumably the customer replacing his microwave in year 2 is not buying another Whirlpool.) Home appliances are no longer considered durable goods and consumers have been trained to accept that they have to replace their appliances every few years rather than have them repaired.
High end manufacturers are still in the replacement parts business for now, Wolfe, Viking etc. Give them time, they'll figure it out too. I believe this is the principle reason there aren't people lining up to try to take over STAC/A&E/repair services from Sears.

I heard the company has been working on getting the techs access to the information they once relied on STAC to provide. There were many processes that required techs to make calls to Servicers Technical Assistance Center (STAC). They are putting alot of decisions back into the tech and local district hands, such as replacement decisions and researching of NLA, no longer available parts. Seems to be all part of the same unwinding that is happening across all of Sears.
