Depends on the company and its HR rules. I'm in the recruiting industry with 20+ years of experience and I have seen it happen before. The larger the company the less of a chance. If they do allow you to contract, they will make use you a staffing firm that is a vendor and they will pay you on a W2. This is called the labor side, you can also go in on the "services" side which is for SOW's and mile stone based. If you are incorporated, have business liability insurance and workers comp then you are good to go.
