Thread regarding Lowe's Cos. layoffs

Does Lowe's ever lay people off during the holiday season?

I'm rather new here, I'd just like to know how safe I am for the next few months - to avoid any unnecessary stress.

Where did I write that I was affected by the store closures? I clearly wrote “there were a few stores that closed nearby and the employees were transferred to other stores…” This happened and it wasn’t just ASMs that transferred. Maybe things were handled differently in your neck of the woods. I’m speaking on what happened in mine.

I never said I didn’t know what stores. And I don’t need credibility when I state fact.

To the guy that said “not true” and that he was transferred with Lowe’s- you’re lying. If you were part of the massive store closings, you may have reapplied and been hired back, but you were not transferred, unless you were an ASM. Some of them were transferred. Many, many of my friends were laid off at the multiple stores in the area that closed then. Some got other position that they applied for in other stores. No one was flat transferred except ASMs.

Not true. I was around then and I still work for Lowe’s. There were a few stores that closed nearby and the employees were transferred to other stores not laid off.

sure that could happen.......but obviously the majority of retailers, the majority of time, will do it right at the end of the 4th quarter which is in january....also the slowest time for any retailer when it benefits them most to do layoffs and close stores to cut cost. aaaand so they then can pretend to have some big plan to their investors going into the new fiscal year.

for all you know those store closings were because leases were up.

You might be right but you bring nothing that adds any credibility. You've been around long enough to know they do, but you don't know what stores closed, or during what holiday, or what year it happened.

They closed a bunch of stores many years ago during the holidays. Either right before thanksgiving or Christmas, I forget which. So anyone telling you they dont(all those people were laid off in those stores), probably hasn’t been around that long.

You’re never safe at Lowe’s.

Psi was known by Market Sales Manager 3 months prior to the layoff. MSM actually cried when she announced the layoff. I was also timed to the start of a new quarter for Lowe’s.
Any time you think Lowe’s cares or has the best for you in mind, think again.

"No, they wait until after the Holidays. No joke. If there is going to be another round of layoffs, it will likely happen at the end of Q4 - think mid January. The new fiscal year begins the first Saturday of February 2020. Any layoffs, potential severance or transition pay will need to be accounted for and resolved before then."

  • This is 100% accurate. I was an LPM that was laid off on an LP conference call on January 4th. Our bosses and their bosses found out Marvin was laying off the department in November....At least they could have given us a heads up, but nope...spend money on Christmas presents, then we'll show you the door....

IMO...Layoffs/cut hours/hiring freeze will be here sooner than later!

At my store we can’t keep people so if you can breathe and walk and talk you’re safe.

That's why you shouldn't be spending money you don't have on presents. If you go into debt to buy presents, you are buying too much stuff.

i think ALL retailers wait till after christmas to cut workers. its a sinister plot really. things look really good in december and you feel good about your job...all the shopping makes you feel needed and then you go out and purchase loads of gifts to put under the tree. then come january when the credit card bill comes due the retailer announces sales werent as great as they wanted or some other BS reason to lay people off or cut hours way down. ive been around long enough to know these layoffs are planned no matter how good the holiday season is.......

Years ago watching a christmas carol again for the ten thousandth time this exchange between scrooge and mr crachit finally hit home and i saw the game in a whole new light — Ebenezer Scrooge: Christmas is a very busy time for us, Mr. Cratchit. People preparing feasts, giving parties, spending the mortgage money on frivolities. One might say that December is the foreclosure season. Harvest time for the money-lenders.

if you want to understand why they do it all in january...you have to understand what actually is taking place in december.

This is the reason for a 100 day season.

When I was hired, it was explaned I had an expiration date, unless they chose to keep me full time.

Everyone was hired as a seasonal, and cuts were made before the later holidays.

I think people confuse layedoff with fired.

A layoff is when a company cuts positions across the board and terminates people for financial reasons that have nothing to do with their performance. At Lowes they tend to happen during Q1 at the beginning or Q3 at then end based on how they will affect the fiscal year.

Firing is done on an individual basis. Its based on performance issues or policy violations. They can happen at any time, but unless you commit a class a violation you go through a process of 3 writes ups before your term. And yes, depending on your manager, Lowe's will fire people during the holidays.
