Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

GM broke the contract and closed plants, uaw is all good with that.

Contract employees loose , uaw and salary wins
I was a good technician at GM Global propulsion systems, No path for me to get hired direct.
This is only for the line worker, what happens to contract technicians?

I was told a two year degree is the requirement by a Sr Manager.
Four year degree, yes of course for engineering that's a given. But no I was told a two year plus my experience was all that was required.
Thanks for the response, it was a good one.🙂

Contract employees are on the lowest rung of the totem pole. This applies to both white collar and blue collar. They always lose, and are the first to go always.

The only advantage contract have over the others, is the flexibility and opportunity to come back later in another position, bringing diversifying skills to your resume.

While I can't specifically say what options are available for blue collar, what I do know as white collar, GM HR specifically stated you have no natural path into a direct position without a four year degree, unless a manager specifically wants to bring you on for your skill set - assuming you work onsite. The system is designed to filter out non-degree candidates when applying, ensuring you won't ever be seen - assuming you are applying at random.

The HR person was nice and informational. I thorough enjoyed their honesty and professionalism. It is the reality of the situation.
