Is Verizon's Voluntary Separation Program An Attempt To Layoff An Older Generation Of Workers?

https://www.forbes.com/sites/jackkelly/2018/12/12/is-verizons-voluntary-separation-a-plan-to-lay-off-an-older-generation-for-a-new-5th-generation/#31e4d1074253

In light of the outsourcing and voluntary separation plan, the remaining employees will be worried about what’s next. It's reasonable for them to think about whether their jobs will be moved to India, other lower-cost locations or eliminated in future downsizings. This doesn’t make it a pleasant and productive work environment to foster enthusiasm and innovation. Employees will have one foot out the door as they face an uncertain future with the company. Those who remain will be anxious, worried and lack motivation, especially since it was announced that Verizon struck a $700 million deal with Infosys, a large outsourcing firm, which will remove 2,500 IT employees from Verizon’s payroll and they will become part of Infosys.

I am posting this here since exactly the same dynamics at play in Macy's.

I disagree.....I was part of the IT layoff in 2Q. Yes, average age of those of us in Field Services was 53 years of age. Most in my group were 60+. Were had a seasoned team with average years of service 30+ years. We all were paid very well for our job performance. Too well. That was the problem. Through our years of service our pay increases were too generous. Back in 1995-2002 we were increased twice a year! That is why our positions were out sourced. That and the fact that we no longer were riding under the radar. That is why the seasoned employee is being let go, Verizon, Macy's, etc. You simply are making more than what average IT professionals are paid.

They could have restructured our positions and had us reapply for positions, but NCR offered a low ball bid. This is what IT is up against. It is just the beginning. Took my severance and moved on. It does not matter who the CTO is. It would have happened because bean counters have anyone making a decent wage on their list. They will figure out a way to do it cheaper. Fact is, if it was my company, I would do the same.

Macy's is engaged in age discrimination of it's tech workforce – though the redundancy justification is there due to consecutive CTO failures. CTOs nowadays are not tech visionaries – they are just layoff recommenders. New generation of Young blood should avoid 2nd or 3rd tier tech like plague!!
