How many of you have a boss that constantly calls you when you’re supposed to have PTO? And I’m not talking about sometimes. I’m talking every single time.
I have a boss that has called me every single time I’ve been on vacation since I’ve worked for them.
Seriously?
But God help you if you don’t answer. You’d be immediately downranked in par meetings and start sliding towards the poooo list to be laid off.

What area of the company do you work in that allows for a 40 hour work week for everyone but VPs? We work 50 hours minimum. You must be in dotcom.
Apparently you were ok taking on a job you know requires this of you, so don't complain. I mean, seriously.. what do you want us to do? Everybody tells you to not answer the calls, and you tell them you have to.
So keep doing that.
@2bza The Home Office has a mandatory 45 hour work week. Maybe those of you on the coast get away with working 40 hours, but we at the Bentonville Home Office had to put in a minimum of 45.
Those of us that no matter how hard we worked, weekends sacrificed to the job, saved the company money, etc, knew that we would never get promoted did the 45 and left. I did what what I could to get promoted and time after time, the manager's favorites got promoted. The s—ups were the ones that worked 50-60 hours a week (or more) in hope of that elusive promotion. I saw too many deserving associates never get promoted and far too many get promoted because they kissed @$$ to the right people like their Director.
Favoritism runs rampant at the Home Office. I spent 10 years there before moving on to a better job that appreciated me more. When I left I had 1/3 of my team doing next to nothing, 1/3, where I fell, doing 45 and leaving, and the other 1/3 pushing 60 hours a week.
Poster down thread clearly hasn’t worked at the HO. The expectation is the same as any salary position. 40 hours minimum. While it’s true that some departments often have 45-50 hour weeks, most are actually an average of 40 hours. VPs are the only ones that work around the clock.
Why do you answer the call or text?
Ask him not to message you on your day off...
@OP Are you in the Home Office, management at a store or club or hourly at the store or club. It makes somewhat of a difference.
If you are at the Home Office, you are salary and the expectation is to work 60 hours a week which includes holidays, vacations and weekends. (There are a handful of hourlies at the HO.) All leaders I knew had their laptops with them 24/7 and even worked on their vacations. Is there anyone else you can train to do your job in your absence so you can enjoy your time off?
If you are management in a store, unfortunately that is the life of retail. You are working closer to 80 hours a week for a pittance. Again, you need to surround yourself with leaders hat can make business decisions in your absence without having to call you.
If you are an hourlie at a store, they should not be calling you while off the clock. Don't pick up the phone. The job s—s far to much too put up with c-ap while not on the clock.
And you're right, the sad thing is if you aren't at the beck and call of Walmart, you're career will stall and you will be in a dead-end job not going anywhere. It's the retail way.
In my case, I compartmentalized my life and turned off Walmart as soon as I walked out the door. I wasn't paid enough to be available 24/7. I refused to answer the phone when I wasn't working. I made sure I had a life/work balance. And guess what? I was never promoted and stuck in the same position. I finally left for greener pastures.
