Because they live in constant fear of loosing the job.
They refuse to stand up for themselves I guess?

Standard of living, yes agreed.
Salary heads pay 30% for health insurance, UAW 3 %
Why can't the salaried get a deal like that?
Everybody calling UAW greedy has it all wrong. A stand must be taken somewhere. An engineer in India will do your job for a lot less so would you accept a cut to match their pay? Someone is always willing to work for less money. An individual can't make a stand alone. Right now only unions have the power to stop pay and benefit cuts during times of soaring profits. If you get a paycheck from somebody than you should hope union wages rise. If a union accepts cuts, and without COLA every contract is a cut, why would a company give an individual more? Everybody needs more, regardless of their job or skills, and It's time we stopped accepting less every year.
salaried technical people and UAW should join forces somehow
I worked as an assemble line worker before getting a degree in engineering.
What you think is hardwork is a joke! a bunch of repetitive work that can be done by a monkey.
Engineers are what makes the company money. not the UAW. the only reason you still have a job is because your line is not automated yet. which eventually it will be.
so go get a degree instead of bullying GM to make your live better without any additional contribution from your side.
Canadian workers did the same, they twisted GMs arm and eventually they left. same will happen to you. try to better yourself and gain some useful skills. Bunch of Overpaid Brats
I dunno I think 11,000 appears to be a lot, but after taxes it's peanuts. The only way to really save, unfortunately, is to skimp on transportation, meaning never lease or buy a new automobile. You can't depend on your job anymore, those days are over, so who wants to take that liability? Not me. I don't want any payments or debt, I run my personal budget just like the company I work for. Skimp on everything!! If you don't pay me I'm not paying you! Period!!

This is so true, it's a very small percentage of skilled trades that can make it if they had to leave.
Most of them are close to retire and actually had allot of talent.
When I was younger and new to the business I always closed my mouth and gravitated to the older set, both hourly and salary, I miss that interaction like crazy.
Now I'm at Ford and it's far far worse than GM, Ford is an absolute cluster F..k if you think GM is poorly run, go try out Fomoco, it's a pathetic company and mismanagement is an understatement, I gotta get out if there ASAP.
I expect that rejecting this offer and continuing to strike would bankrupt many hourly employees. That is why it will be approved. To those UAW radicals, I say if you are as skilled and talented as you think, you can work anywhere and name your price. The reality is that you might be considered a “skilled trade” by the UAW, but most that I encounter on a daily basis would not make it outside of GM.
Winter is coming, they don't want to be outside in the cold.
That's a wrap, where's my 11k $$$$
Shoooo iza gotsta sign dis contstrak

Very very true, I have worked with many salaried employees that know zero about this business, I have also worked and seen some UAW folks that can barely speak properly.
Here I am a passionate automotive enthusiast that's knowledgeable and can't get a break in the field I love. 11k would be an absolute blessing for my family, from where I sit that money is to shut the line workers mouth period, and you know what they will fall for it Hook line and sinker.
I was a skilled technician that loved the job and looked forward to coming in every day, I'm almost finished with school and I just can't seem to win, I lost my job as a contract employee after 18 years with GM, I was on time, I didn't complain and it took me along time to finally get to GPS/Powertrain. I would have never expected things would be this difficult, all I wanted was to be a blue badge as I took pride in what I was doing always. I grew up at GM guys...I miss my job and friends.
The bigger the signing bonus, the worse the contract. Salary got their concessions back the day the bankruptcy was finalized. 10 years later and union workers haven't got one thing back.
This is the OP. I dont mean to disrespect you guys. But, we all work for GM and we dont want any hate to be generated by anyone so all of us can work together again in harmony. God bless all. Have a nice weekend and get warm.
When a company's CEO makes $22M while the average employee has to have 2 earners in the house to even make ends meet comfortably, you know there's something wrong. The white collared folks are severely underpaid. We have advanced degrees, rare skillsets, and just as dedicated, if not more, and yet make less than 0.5% of those at the top... surely we're exploited! And whenever there is a drop in profit, we face the cuts!
The share the Union is demanding is not much. I'm suprised that the engineers with much higher qualifications & rarer skills are mute about this! And the next time the company goes down because of the stupid decisions at the top, guess who gets the shaft? And those make those stupid decisions won't lose a thing.
Aren't Bonuses taxed at 40%?
So an 11k bonus is actually only $6600
right?
What is that on average?
between 1 - 2 months of Full pay?
(also consider that most have missed a month of pay already)
Nothing to sneeze at, i'd be happy to put that in the bank....
but was THAT all they were striking for?
Doesn't seem to add up here.
just say'ing...

Hey OP, are you saying the picketing UAW workers are blocking non-union workers from entering their workplaces. That strikes me as odd, seeing that the UAW doesn't even respect their own picket lines:

Stand in solidarity with your brothers and sisters, right? Or is that only when it benefits you, and too bad for all other times?

@tlv I completely agree with you on bringing manufacturing jobs to this country. Unfortunately I don't see many, if any at all, coming back unless the workers want minimum wage or less. Or if the workers received good UAW wages, owning a car would become a luxury.
Many people blame the government for companies moving their jobs overseas. The truth is that our corporations sold our country in the name of more and more profits. They wanted to build the vehicles for less cost and for a bigger profit margin.
They should not accept the agreement,
They should battle to keep plants open and bring manufacturing back to the US and tell GM to invest the $11k in the plants or plan on a longer strike.
Bring the Blazer back here and start building the Mexican built engines at Romulus or Flint engine.
To offer up 11k to strikers I can see is very tempting to end this but I don't think it's the solution to the issue and that is over seas manufacturing.
Classic GM tactic to tangle the great signing bonus carrot over their heads while there are stipulations in the contract that close more plants than were closed before.
I would not be fast to sign either.
And OP trying to pity hard workers at the tech center, please, there are many salary employees still there that don't know their butt from a hole in the ground when it comes to automobiles!
Congratulation UAW, continue to make notorious GM management down and disrespect salaried employees in GM as they are kissing their above for their jobs!
@OP You get over it. You must be one of the jealous white collar workers getting your meager 2% raise that barely covers cost of living every year hating on the UAW doing the bare minimum to justify not getting fired.
That bonus is going to cover lost wages while the UAW was on strike.
There's a saying that it takes a village to raise a child. I have a similar perspective toward companies.
If you are a 1-person company where you do all the work, you get to keep all the profits. Most companies are not run by one person. Therefore, you need a 'village' to run a company. And EVERY person is important to the success at that company from the CEO to that person on the sales floor or the one on the line. Companies can't continue to pay outrageous salaries to the people at the top while neglecting the true heroes at the bottom of that corporate pyramid.
The most important people at any company are those in the trenches making the company money. They deserve their fair share as opposed to the CEOs and Executives. What value do they bring? Making decisions? Outlining the future of the company in electric and AV vehicles? Cutting jobs to justify their salaries and existence? I'd love to see any of them spend a month on the line. They couldn't hack it one day.
