Macy’s, Gap and L Brands have all been downgraded by Credit Suisse which warned of a “tougher” road ahead for the U.S. retail sector.

The trio, known as softlines retailers because they sell ‘soft goods’ such as clothing, shoes and home furnishings, were all downgraded to underperform from neutral as the Swiss bank’s analysts said the sector would face mounting pressures into the holiday season.

The back story. Department store and retail stocks have struggled so far in 2019, as the growth of e-commerce companies, such as Amazon, and global trade tensions have hit sales.

Macy’s stock has fallen 49% year-to-date, Gap has tumbled 36% and L Brands has slid 35%.

In response to the first comment... the most people do nowadays is go in stores to see the product, then buy it online, and get it shipped to their door. hardly ever buy in stores when I could be saving more online with promos and apps, without having to deal with messy stores, incompetent (and few) sales associates. other benefits of online: more sizes, more products, saves time, can easily compare with other retailers' products. easy to order a bunch of items, try on at home, and return the rest.

By improving blood sugar control, the team notes that working out before eating breakfast may cut one’s risk of developing cardiovascular disease and type-2 diabetes.

This is b—s—. At the end of day people look at clothes shopping as an experience, it’s not like buying a fixed product. People want to try, feel and look. Jane and Joe customer isn’t going to buy everything online especially something that makes them feel good. I feel a 2nd act coming.
