Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

4-10s debate

Benefits: use less gas, less money for child care, 3 day weekends, more time with famiy, about 52 extra days off a year, ability to work 2 extra days a week of over time and still having a day off. How can we get the ball rolling for 4 tens? ... But what do you think?

So which shift is expendable ?
Just think after working 10 hrs straight time you can stay over for 2 hrs of over time and that sounds alot better than 8 hrs straight and 4 hours of over time ... Duhhhh ! Think about what your asking for ... smh !

This whole thing is simply a way to get rid of more people. The directors are trying to sell it to us younger guys as having 3 days off blah blah blah but we will have everyday off soon.

MIC’s work 3 12’s and an 8 for 24/7 coverage, Anything can be negotiated with the unions.

Good news, I think UP will allow all field managers to do 4 10’s. The only downside is you have to do them all in a row for a total of 40 hours straight. The good news is you get one day off and then you come in and do another consecutive 4 10’s. But the best news of all is after working 80 hours in a 5 days, you will get one free hot dog. No paid overtime though.

There are (or at least were) many engineering gangs that work 4x10hr days.

Bottom line is that 4-10s will never happen beacuse our unions cant even comunicate or agree with each other. Thats why nothing gets done and why the unions seperated are totally weak....We need to unite, like how the power rangers small robots combines and makes one bis a$$ robot thing. BOOM!!!

Two ten hour shifts cannot absorb three eight hour shifts. There’s twenty four hours in a day. Two ten hour shifts only gives you twenty hours of coverage. If you stagger people you have periods of even fewer people available during certain times.

Hold on, lets think about this for a second. They already furloughed most of the personnel, they won't survive by cutting a 3rd of it so that wont happen. The other shifts will abosorb third shift. Plus if they have 5000 locomotives they still would need same amount of people to work the same amount of units. Simple math people.

My shop basically has 2 shifts already. Plus its no surprise that the 3rd shift is the least productive.

So let me get this straight... you’re suggesting fewer people are needed... so more layoffs. I’m sure your fellow workers really appreciate your caring.

How does it eliminate a whole shift? If you have two ten hour shifts, who covers the other four hours, if you have overlapping shifts you have gaps with less than minimal workforce. You still have to cover the weekends, etc... have gone as far as writing a schedule to look at how you will have the coverage needed and how it will save money? You mentioned two days to work overtime and still have a a day off. I think you need to work on the math.

4-10s means less people needed.

This is what the company will do next. Think about it. If you have a shop that’s working 24 hours a day the 4 10s concept can elimate a whole shift and lay more people off.

You didn’t mention what the benefits for the company are. It’ll never fly unless you do.

Lance said you asked for 4 10’s and we value your feedback but we’re sticking with 20 12’s. Be safe out there.

Clear it with the transportation unions first and let em know not to gave on a dime so they can sit on their asses making their 6 figures. Shame when a crewmember brags about making $13k extra for hiding from mgmt and delaying calls for cabs and the rewst of us pay for the waste.

OP:

The working culture at UP consists of hiring people and feeding them into the meat grinder as soon as possible. If they burnout, quit, collapse, or commit s–c-de, UP really doesn't care. It's difficult to see how people who treat their employees as poorly as UP does would go to a 4/10 schedule. Even if they did so everyone is subject to being called-up at any time anyway, so it would make little to no difference.

If you want a better work/life balance do what many of us have already done: quit UP and move to another company.

Well after the last contracts we know we are not going to get much of anything. Might as well be home more often. Wont cost the company anything.
