Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

GM is dependent on employee+family/friends purchases

GM is absolutely dependent on an emotional connection or implied support obligation to sell vehicles. Not just by the current recently-disappeared professionals, but by their extended families over multiple generations.

That's why GM didn't have program car leases for professional employees like Toyota does. GM needs Midwestern employees to purchase. And they are firing the employees that can actually afford to pay $40-60K or more. The lower paid folks can barely make payments on an entry level vehicle on top of the student loans, rent, etc. Remarkably short-sighted. Wondering if the health care savings (the real motivation) is worth it.

I wonder which employees are still using the employee purchase plan?

Especially since they cut the benefits so much that it isn't much of an incentive anymore.

Did they think all those baby boomers, a generation brand loyal unless given a reason to change, were going to stay loyal once laid off? And does GM really think they can hide their greed and dishonestly to the socially-conscious Millennials? Just stupid.

I just bought my first non-GM vehicle EVER. Since I have no more skin in the GM game, I decided to support a manufacturer that employs my nephew and a good family friend instead. My sister and her husband also just bought a brand-new non-GM vehicle. I recommend the people still employed at GM and Mary herself go buy an extra car or two on their salaries to help keep GM afloat. My family is done with GM.

And let's not forget the awful customer support, lack of responsibility for safety and standing behind their products. We never learned anything from the ignition recall. So much sketchy stuff still happening with CSS engines

GM and Ford are at the bottom of my list. Whenever I'm asked, I tell my friends who are the market all about how sketchy things are jere at GM, and how poor decisions are made based on the buddy system, shortcuts, cover-ups, etc. But for some, the "big discounts" on overpriced junk trumps all logic and discernment. Those I cannot help!

I was going to purchase the new Equinox as my gratitude for accepting me into the "GM Family" and to begin my (assumed) long-term career relationship with GM. Oh wait, I can't afford the Equinox now that I'm unemployed! My friend texted me a few weeks ago to see if he can have the "Friends and Family" discount for the Silverado he's planning to buy... and I had to embarrassingly inform him that I'm "no longer eligible" for discounts (without mentioning my employment status for obvious reason). Thanks GM! That was way too close! Just imagine if I had jumped the gun and bought the car... I'd be on the hook for paying off the loan for a car with which I now have a negative association.

I was a white-collar employee from 2015-2018. I left on my own, prior to layoffs. Based on my experiences, I can't see a situation where I'd by another GM product. I was a good little GM soldier, acquiring GM vehicles for my wife and myself. Unfortunately, that loyalty was a one-way street.

GM at this point would be last on my list, even in the unlikely event it was a better value. I'm not interested in contributing even a fractional amount to the bonus pool for incompetent boot-lickers and power hungry leadership. Those types are already well-overpaid.

FCA and Honda and that's that. Buy what you like and can afford, Honda builds a bullet proof car and FCA builds quality along with beautiful interiors and exteriors.
I feel GM is over as far as automotive is concerned.

We're a captured market in their eyes. The sh!t management give staff if they see you driving anything other than a GM product is disgraceful. It's not in our contract to buy GM, sick of hearing we have to because it shows you support the company. BS, I work to my best which supports the company, unfortunately we dont have vehicles i want! I can get better discounts through friends from FCA, so I look after my family and choose the right product at the right price which usually is not GM.

I don't know how anyone could afford auto prices today. Prices are way to high, it's likely l will never buy a new car again in my lifetime. On $100,000 salary, $20,000 is the max price I would ever pay and leasing is out of the question unless it's for a personal business I own.

Lost my 36 year loyalty when they walked me out in February. Next car would have been a gm, but now looking at Lexus. They changed my views of car brands, my families, and now my friends.

Thank you GM for having such bad leadership that hurt so many talented people and their families.

Why would they expect Midwesterners to buy inferior cars at inflated prices out of loyalty?

They lost my purchases, along with those of my family, back in February when the walked me out. Combined, we had purchased several GM products over the years. No more.
