IBM VP HR Admits Firing 100,000 Older Employees To Improve Corporate Image for Millennials

I wonder how much of this went on at GM under Mary Barra's "leadership"? Perhaps there will be some lawsuits soon, now that all of those laid off will have received the last of their severance pay at the end of August (We signed away our right for lawsuits to receive the severance pay, but I can't see GM Legal coming after past employees to recover the severance pay if we file a lawsuit now).

That's ok, gm and the rest will pay dearly for this c-ap. Kids out of college have huge debt and will not buy these vehicles. Plus they are not loyal to any company. Gm will spend millions and millions and these kids will bail at the drop of a hat!! My company is bleeding employee s left and right, all young, now they are playing kiss azz to everyone for fear of not having enough people. In addition none of younger ones want to work in the plants. What a mess!

The 100,000 fired IBMers can't respond by refusing to buy any more IBM products. Few retail products.

But GM is absolutely dependent on an emotional connection or implied support obligation to sell vehicles. Not just by the current recently-disappeared professionals, but by their extended families over multiple generations.

That's why GM didn't have program car leases for professional employees like Toyota does. GM needs Midwestern employees to purchase. And they are firing the employees that can actually afford to pay $40-60K or more. The lower paid folks can barely make payments on an entry level vehicle on top of the student loans, rent, etc. Remarkably short-sighted. Wondering if the health care savings (the real motivation) is worth it.

At GM, they're all about the new college hires.

Extra training ("boot camp"), social events, mentorship and help, rotation programs to help them network and see what other departments are like, and so on.

Things that other employees don't get.

I bet all the high tech companies do this.

Google, Facebook, apple, Amazon, etc.

I think they've all been sued for age discrimination.
