Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Any truth to this?

Heard MI IT will be hit hard next round. Jobs to shifted to either Austin, Dublin, or Bangalore.

If yes, when is this supposed to happen?

@10k6YSNV-5sgm - Affirmative. Some are being told that their jobs are being eliminated so they need to try and find a different position or external job post haste.

The WARN act is triggered by laying off more than a certain percentage of a site within a certain period of time.

That's why back in February, some sites had to pay extra severance. They laid off a high enough percentage. Other sites didn't.

The easy way around WARN is to lay off in small batches throughout the year to stay under the threshold.

WARN is a Federal Act. https://www.doleta.gov/programs/factsht/WARNFactSheetupdated03.06.2019.pdf.

WARN doesnt apply in MPG (I was test/validation engineer level 2 driver) let go in February. Warn act is by county when I talked with HR.

Is it true that more "vehicle engineers" similar to myself are being let go?? I know CAE is the future

The management friends and family stay but the dedicated hard workers who do the right thing go. That makes for a toxic environment.

I was laid off ten years ago and in hind site it was the best thing that ever happened to me. I talked to a local supplier to GM and he told me that they reverted right back to their old ways right after the bankruptcy.

I always laugh when the Big Three complain they can't get qualified workers. They're reputation proceeds them and people don't want to work for them!

WARN won’t come into play if they reduce headcount in small batches, thus saving money and flying under the media radar.

There are pay disparities being addressed here. There are Level 7s in Michigan making more than Level 8s in Austin. Likewise with Level 8s in Michigan making more than Level 9s in Austin. No age or performance motivations, just simple math.

Apparently morale took a big hit after the Feb layoffs so Austin is looking to make the upcoming layoffs more gradual and under the radar. I havent heard timing of the next rounds but they are coming. There are specific headcount targets to hit for all departments over the next 18 months

They did a 10% layoff in 2018 in small bursts, department by department, spread over the whole year. They kept it very quiet, and I never saw any news articles about it.

Then of course was the big layoff in February. They couldn't keep that one quiet.

@10k6YSNV-qxm is correct. It won't be the mass firings that occurred in February, but it will occur in small bursts to try and fly under the negative press radar. The method described is accurate as people or teams get moved as a "reorg" and then individuals are reassigned a new position which they may or may not be qualified for. Not long after is when you get tapped to leave.

As always, performance will have nothing to do with your release for the most part. If you are already buddies with the leadership in the new org, your odds of remaining employed tend to be much higher regardless of performance or skill set. I watched very talented, professional people get walked out while the management's friends, some of which could barely understand simple technologies...this is IT we are talking about) were protected.

Deplorable, but is the norm at GM.

I have heard similar rumors, but the shift was to be over the next 1 to 2 years to not raise any alarms. If you are in Warren and are in the process of transferring your knowledge or have just changed to a new role outside of your area of expertise, there is a good chance you will be gone by 2021
