Thread regarding Barnes & Noble layoffs

Truth and fiction

EVERYTHING I’ve posted to this , as well as other sites, have been rock solid TRUTH. I’ve read lots of “fiction” on here . I’m in BN management. So , of course I can’t give away my location. The sale of BN will NOT be a GOOD thing for us. We’ve lost our “fan base”. Our loss of experienced, career employees did not go unnoticed by our regular customers. They DID NOT LIKE IT. I heard from several and over a year later, still do. Our sakes are BAD. I’m told to expect underperforming stores to be closed. A LOT of BN stores are not experiencing their once good sales. I come away from conference calls feeling uneasy. Not enough information & more speculation. Ive been interviewing with companies and feel I’ve been passed over because I work for BN. Who would’ve thought we’d ever see that happen ?! My DM has had similar experiences. The initial thousands ( yes, the numbers reported to the press were NOT ACCURATE) let go have done well. Many companies scooped them up feeling they were getting great employees who were treated badly. The 5 let go from my store all had new positions very soon. 2 of them are making more than BN managers ! I’m glad for them. Companies don’t want the management of this once industry giant. They feel they’re not the employee they want in theirs. I beg of those left to start now to rebuild their careers. Play down BN. It may help you.

“Of course the managers knew! The corrupt DM in New England decided who would go and who would stay in our store weeks before that Monday.”
KY DM knew too ! Lied saying he didn’t. Always talking “God bless” . God don’t like liars. Might even be a commandment about it.

“The managers ( at least here in TN) are a bunch of two faced liars. They knew ahead of Feb. lied about that. Then afterward I’ve heard them talk c-ap about those let go.Have ZERO RESPECT for them”
My coworker told me they posted this here.total truth ! After walking one of those fired, to the front door. When they left, broken, devastated.that fake bald jerk of a manager turned around. Big smile on his face. I couldn’t believe he was smiling after what had just happened. That told me all I needed to know. Not only are we all replaceable, they care nothing for us as people, I was told by another Mgr he even fired one over the phone. Pathetic culture this company has . All talk no soul.

“Oh, they don't want the 'little' customer base they have to know. I worked at a local large store and had developed great customer relations with regular customers who lived in the area. I will, even so often, encounter one or two together at the local mall or food market and they are happy to see me, but I find out that they asked other employees or managers where I was or where another full timer was that had been laid off. They were told that I quit or that I found something new. They are told that about every one that was laid off on the same damn day. ”
Yes. The managers ( at least here in TN) are a bunch of two faced liars. They knew ahead of Feb. lied about that. Then afterward I’ve heard them talk c-ap about those let go.Have ZERO RESPECT for them. Im in school and am just picking up what little hours I can get. Other part timers feel the same . They’ll get what they deserve for their actions.

Oh, they don't want the 'little' customer base they have to know. So, I always tell them what actually happened and most tell me that they won't go back. One great husband wife told me that their Membership was up for renewal and they were not going to do it because of what I told them. The regular clientele loved the full timers and that relationship of talking a bit or being happy to see you about product or such made their shopping experience brighter.

When I was fired last February I had to sign a document that I would not discuss my severance with anyone other than spouse & I would not speak against BN online & i could not work for Amazon or another bookstore ( they fire you after 17 years then tell you where you can’t work ?!?!) If I did any of these things it stated my severance would end & id be responsible for repayment of what I’d been given !!!!
Only a company who knows they’ve done wrong would go to such lengths !
Of course I had to sign the blackmail to get my hush money severance package.
Even after firing the thousands they thought they could control their discarded employees. Thanks to this site the truth can be told. How would what little customer base they have left feel if they knew how they treated the fired full timers ?!

Putting Barnes and Noble management on a resume cost me 2 interviews. One acted like I personally was bringing the company down and the other wanted to discuss deficiencies in BN management.
Good luck job hunters. The word on BN is out & it’s poison !

I do not know the person who posted this, but I was a loyal B&N employee for almost 20 years before Black Monday, and I can tell you for sure that having this company and that length of time on my resume had a detrimental effect during at least three job interviews. An exact quote from one hiring manager is, "I've hired people from Barnes And Noble before, and a couple have worked out." The assumption is that you have stood around reading books and sipping tea, instead of working. All I can say is, after several very, very bad experiences and ugly false starts, I've landed in a small company, making a little less money an hour, but working 8-4 Monday - Friday, no nights, no holidays, no weekends, no corporate nonsense, and no severely damaged individuals with Napoleon complexes. I would not even consider going back to Barnes And Noble. Keep looking, even if you get another job, until you're happy somewhere Life is too short to be blindly loyal, and it is never appreciated.
