I heard that Mattel has been caught artificially bolstering sales of both by having employees and agency personnel buy up product and post false reviews. Apparently this isn't the first time they been accused of this. As a result, Target (who was supposed to launch HotWheels ID this fall) has cancelled all orders and Amazon is deleting listings of Star Wars Barbie.
Never mind the fact that these are both woefully inferior products that don't appeal to the brands' core audiences of 3-5 year olds. Mattel has lost it's ability to manipulate the market since RD has run out of tried and true gimmicks to inflate earnings, perception and results. Old dogs, like RD, can't learn new tricks - they just rehash the old ones.
