Thread regarding Bed Bath & Beyond layoffs

Future of ASMs?

What's the info on ASMs and will we keep them? In the hours culture we now live in how are they justified with 50 when they don't really do anything someone else does?

I'm just hoping for a severance package for when they do the next round of layoffs. The ones let go in August 2017 are the lucky ones, at least they had an opportunity to find another job when we're not in the dawn of a new recession. It's gonna be tough to find positions for displaced ASMs, especially with more and more companies going under like Forever 21, JC Penney, Sears, etc. Other companies like Target and Walmart are doing their own "realignments" and are reducing management positions themselves.

They won’t have many ASMs left because there is no realistic use for them in B, C or even D volume stores. The Sups in those stores get paid a little more than those in A volumes for this reason. They have keys, they write review, hire, and many can now do all tasks an ASM would if they are in the “operations” Dept. They also sometimes run a whole half of a store. The fact is that bbb is becoming less and less antiquated and more up to speed. I can’t say it helps the fate of the company... but the position is redundant in most stores.

I see Dept Sups that do way more than most Dept managers ever did because their positions are basically the new equivalent of the ASM role. In many stores they now have a “lead supervisor”.

Why do you think they've been pushing for supervisors and leads to have keys and to be able to do everything an ASM does? Great idea, have the old, overpaid ASMs train their replacements before they kick them out. Tale as old as time.

LOL ASMs do more. No. They're just dumb enough to work more hours doing the exact same things as leads and supervisors and thinking somehow this makes them more valuable. Actually being paid so much more to do the job of a lead or sup makes all of you a target. You've all been protected for far too long.

Agreed, however the leadership of the company is not smart enough to realize the importance of the ASM role. ASM group in B volume and below Stores will soon be wishing they left the Company on their own prior to next wave of layoffs

ASM’s are just basically Super hourlies. Joe Schmoe can come in and open and close the buildings now.

The asms do a lot more than you know. The 15.00 an hour supervisors don’t care and will be gone when something better comes along. This company needs the dedication and loyalty that the asms give. If they do away with them they are just going to sink faster than they are now. Be smart not cheap. You get what you pay for. There are still a lot of asms who do care and want what is best for the company. They need to think about the customers, what will bring them back...
