Thread regarding Norfolk Southern Corp. layoffs

Tired of all the rumors, let’s get some facts

I know that I don’t stand alone in being tired of all the rumors, in fact quite a few are just sick of hearing them daily. When is NS going to actually sack up & let us know what’s really going on? If they’re going to furlough a bunch more of us, they need to either do it already or let us know what to expect in the near future so we can start to look for other ways to take care of our families.

Support unions? Where were the unions when the last 5 contracts were negotiated? In 20 plus years I've only seen them when some sorry worker finally got fired. The only thing they have EVER cared about is their pockets! They're no better than NS. When you have union members and local chairmans selling everyone out for a gangleader job or a spot on lean teams or any other committee that makes them look good. Let's see how they are when more workers are furloughed and it starts cutting into their back accounts. People we're on our own so hopefully everyone lands back on their feet and can support their families. For everyone that puts greed first, just remember that you all have to answer to someone higher.

It's near impossible to get any facts. Most lower level management only know what's going to happen a day or two before they are told to layoff employees. In the case of management layoffs they are not told at all. Their TOP21 plan had employment shrinking by roughly 3000 employees mostly through attrition. If you are on the bottom of any seniority roster there's a chance you will get furloughed in todays environment. Just about every department at NS has taken hits, and there will be more to come overall. There is nothing any union can do to stop it, but you should support your union 100% as best you can because if there was no union, you might not have a job at all. If the mechanical unions were to suddenly disappear, your jobs would be contracted out. And that goes for the conductors also.

Do you really think they care about you or you being able to provide for your family?
They have already known what their going to do and the domino effect will continue.
