GOM Safety will be back, though it may take some more bloodshed. The fall started when Casey retired, he cared and knew what he was doing. Right after Casey was an exodus of a lot of experience and people who knew what they were doing. The VP and GM at that time were non-factors in pretty anything, particularly Safety. Connor at GM now also cares and is legit, but what he has to work with in Safety Leadership is underpowered and those gaps will continue to hurt for a while. The VPs are figureheads, not really a factor save for a couple of them through the years. With at least one more exodus of experience happening as we speak we can only hope that it doesn't get much worse.

Thats not true, in GOM D&C there is always time to do it right.............Until it cost money, then F@ck it just get'R done.

I think I know what you are saying. Since D&C took over HES Corp nearly two years ago, the low moral and discriminatory activities have been transferred to that organization. I do work in GOM and I can tell you, I came from Corp HES and it was bad when I was there but I hear it is even worse now. It is all tied to MARC. I just sat through our PDC meeting in Houston to talk about clear leader behaviors and I can tell you, it is all BS. We meet to do our local selections and the question is always, do we have a female that can do that job. It is wrong.

Of course there is an extra cost for safety, and like everything else you get what you pay for. Now saying all that, a good safety department makes up it's cost in productivity and profit. But it absolutely costs money for safety, same as it costs do drill a well, set a platform etc. Without the expenditure in all of the above there will be no return.

They mean well but with a purge you have to learn some things the hard way.
Cycles. It's not that the current cast in GOMBU doesn't want safety, or that they won't pay for it, it's just that they pretty much don't know how to get the results they want. As a Business Partner the people we dealt with 5 years ago knew their stuff, had lived and learned and it showed. The ones in place now mean well, I'll leave it at that.
@3ews, I agree safety is important, but the unwritten first rule in the Chevron Way and Tenets Operation is Make Money. Everyone knows this, only they keep their mouths shut about it. Not just at Chevron, but everywhere.
One more Deepwater Horizon Macondo-like event would put the issue of GOMBU safety into a perspective all can understand. Lets hope that doesn’t happen but in a lower for longer price environment it might be the death knell of the BU if another moratorium were issued. Safety should be of the utmost importance IMHO. The safety culture has changed in GOMBU. Not for the better. That is palpable to those with pay attention. The de-emphasis on safety is not consistent with the Chevron Way and Tenets Operation. It starts at the top.
There are several reasons why a company won’t spend copious amounts on safety and nor are they expected to. One is that we don’t want to discourage companies entering a particular industry because of the subsequent loss of employment and opportunities to life’s enjoyment. Another relates to the doctrine of distributive compensation, i.e. insurance. If something goes wrong then the insurance firm pays up which means society foots the bill. The only cost to the company is the insurance premium which is covered by the stakeholders in that company such as the employees.
Safety isn’t just about economics, it’s also to do with what’s fair, reasonable and just as per the Caparo principle.
GOM often takes safety several magnitudes above the company norm, maybe other BU’s as well. It’s been observed however that when $ cost per barrel approaches $40 this problem goes away. It’s like Magic.

The drama continues in GOM. If you are not one of the chosen favorites you are out. Employees with strong voices are pushed aside for the ones that keep their mouths shut and just go along. Moving to Downstream has been a breath of fresh air for me as a 15 year employee.
Well basically it’s the terminal decline of fossil fuel. Machiavellians have the best chance of survival.
