Is two-week notice mandatory?

Just wondering, is giving PepsiCo two weeks notice mandatory? I want to quit and considering how miserable I am here, I really don't want to stay here a day here than I have to. I can start my new job next Monday if I want to.

Do I have to wait out the two weeks or should I just walk out?

Old thread I know, but looked for this from years ago and updating my experience in an at will state and further knowledge gained through the years.

  1. Do they give you two weeks notice on firings? No. They generally get o e last days labor out of you and walk you out at the end of the shift.
  2. There are no laws on 2 week notices. Companies may have policies on the topic, but policy isn't law. What are they going to do if you don't follow policy? Fire you? Involuntary separation even with a two weeks notice can potentially qualify an employee for unemployment benefits also.

And last I checked my PepsiCo brand handbook there are no policies on two weeks notice since their latest update. So it isn't required, and on rehiring the division I work for has been hiring felons they need workers that badly.

Always refer to your employee handbook, when considering a resignation. Also, if you are an employee who has an employment contract, refer to the separation information in it. The short answer is, it's not illegal to give less than two weeks' notice, whether or not you work in an at-will state. There may be some benefits you lose, as a result of giving less than the required notice, though.

All this talk about references....Officially Pepsi employees are not allowed to give references for ex employees I suspect all the people saying don’t burn bridges are the left over management.

If you have something waiting, go for it. It might not be there tomorrow. If possible give Pepsi two weeks notice. In my past experience with Pepsico, you will be escorted out of the building as soon as you give your two weeks notice. Pepsico will give you minutes notice, when they let you go. Good luck.

If you say you are going to work for coke, you will be terminated immediately. Maybe you’ll get 2 weeks pay, but you will certainly not be considered rehireable.

Just give them two weeks notice and tell them you are going to work for Coke. They will immediately walk you out the door and they will pay you for the two weeks.

Do what is best for YOU

If you get an offer and they want you to start in a week then give 1 weeks notice

An additional thought is personal relationships and references. Have you worked with anyone who you might want to ask for a reference in the future? If so, then do the right thing. I gave a reference last week and among the questions was “would you hire this person?”. Also, you never know when a current colleague might be a hiring manager someplace else and would be in a position to recruit you. That’s how I got my job at PepsiCo. Don’t burn bridges with the people even if you deplore the company. Now with all of that, you could ask your manager if you can burn any vacation you have left. If they don’t really need you, you could at least take a little time off between jobs. That is a good thing if you are going to have to work for a while in your new job without taking vacation.

It will be beneficial for you in the long run to stay the 2 weeks. You want to leave on good terms for references for future employment opportunities for yourself. Remember after 2 weeks this place is a distant bad memory

I understand that you are very unhappy but I would suggest you give 2 weeks notice and be prepared to be there for that time. They may decide you don't need to stay that long - you win. Or you may need to be there for the 2 weeks. You can look your new employer in the eye about how you left the company and they will know that you are a quality hire. Take the high road. You'll be glad you did.

It depends .......... how long have you been at Pepsi? Less than 6 months, I would just walk out, or send an email if I hate it that much. Over one year, do the 2 weeks so when they call references . Good luck!

No requirement, but it's best practice. If it's harming your mental health, or you have another opportunity lined up immediately, go for it. It's accurate to day you will probably be coded as not eligible for rehire (when they start hiring Americans again?) but it is true to my knowledge that if another employer asks if you are eligible for rehire, they can then say no. If it's a good new company, they'll ask you why, and you can be honest.

You will be coded in the system as job abandonment, not eligible for rehire. Not good when future employers check your employment history.

I can only comment on my state of Illinois- absolutely not! This is an at will employment state. The company can and will can your a-- for any legal reason and you can quit with or without notice. Is it good practice? Maybe not but ask the 1000s let go by this oversized junk food sinking ship how much notice they were given. If the grass is greener and you need out...go for it whenever you want.
