Thread regarding PepsiCo Inc. (Pepsi) layoffs

New to PepsiCo

Been here less than a year - and now I see everybody is talking about something major that's about to go down. I'm going to guess that my job is in jeopardy, since I'm assuming I'm among the last hires. Is that how it works here - last in first out? Or is there a different system used when it comes to layoffs?

Thanks for any info.

New employee or tenured employee it does not mater, You are not considered an asset within the organization or a liability. I was just handed my package my reward for 2 plus decades of loyalty and hard work within the IT organization. In the latest rounds of cuts I am aware a number of people such as myself were let go that had decades of service and others that only had a few years.

The company name looks very good on a job resume, Don't consider your full time employment as long term. Get the skills you need and move on before they show you the door. Just remember that you are as loyal to your employer as they are loyal to you. And with the massive job cuts over the past few years impacting all functions PepsiCo has demonstrated that they do not appreciate your loyalty, hard work or the knowledge and skills you bring to your job everyday.

A friend who was let go last February told me her packet contained a report of how many were let go by age group. I think she is in her 30’s. Youth may not protect you if you are needed to avoid age discrimination lawsuits.

You should worry any of the following apply:

  • you still have a pension

  • you are a senior mgr or mid-level banded exec in a dept where there’s too many levels or less than 6-7 direct reports/mgr

  • you’re in a department whose work can be outsourced or moved to another location to save $$ long-term

  • you have a poor relationship with your boss or have received a 4 or 5 CI in the last 2 years.

Also, keep in mind PepsiCo’s commitment to at least 50% diversity in management by 2020. The only way they can get there is by laying off people and hiring/promoting diversity hires. If your employment doesn’t help them meet that number, you’re at risk. If you do represent diversity, then you’re safer than many of your colleagues.

Don't count yourself completely safe as the company lays off just enough of the younger employees to avoid an age discrimination lawsuit (targeted layoffs would be discriminatory). It's unfortunate, but the younger and less experienced are also easier to replace and are lower cost.

Pension folks (pre 2010?) are the most susceptible...primarily up to Sr. Director. After that, the club just keeps creating layers to protect their own mostly.

It depends on your area I think. Speculation: Field management/banded execs will probably be hit, and probably their supporting functions (if department only has to support half the people it used to...). Rumors IT Ops/Sustain will be hit as well, but IT jobs are the easiest to skim and offshore anyway. There may be cuts to other functions but the focus won't be there

I was laid off after spending 31 years with them, there was a guy who spent 9 months with the company that was laid off on the same day.

Numbers are all over the place.

I had my job eliminated when I hit 35 years with them. You are probably safer than anyone.

Got let go 2 years ago after over 30 years. They will not touch you if you are between age 25 and 35. The company is all about young people. My advise don not stay more that a few years get out and go somewhere where they value employees.

It is usually the “seasoned” people with pensions.. 20 years or more etc ... Pepsico does want it wants just very frustrating not to know anything good or bad .

It is usually first in first out. It is all about cutting cost and folks that have been there longer cost more. There is no loyalty to any individuals.

No, you're new so you're still relatively cheap labor. It historically was first in last out, but seems to be swinging more to mid-level cuts
